[Houraisan Kaguya Cosplay] Touhou Project's Dream of Night and Bamboo Forest

For the photography setup, we chose a very traditional Japanese wooden house scene; the lattice doors and wooden flooring have excellent texture. To fit Kaguya-hime's cool yet gorgeous impression, the makeup maintained an overall cool tone this time, focusing on enhancing those iconic red pupils. Paired with straight long black hair with full bangs, we strived to recreate the temperament of that Moon Princess from Touhou Project in this Japanese-style scene cosplay.

The costume incorporates blended elements. The upper body retains many Lolita-style ruffles and lace, with excellent layered stacking at the neckline and cuffs. The design of the waist and skirt hem integrates Japanese and Chinese tailoring—with white as the main body paired with large areas of layered pink-white, plus a deep wine-red inner skirt hem, providing an exceptionally strong sense of layers under the lighting. The white ruffled calf-high socks on the legs paired with black platform leather shoes featuring colorful plaid bows carry a fairytale sweetness while beautifully elongating the leg lines, making the entire look appear more slender. This stands as a unique take on Chinese-style Lolita.

In terms of accessories, the jeweled branch in hand is one of the visual centers of the entire look. Each colorful bead string on the branch refracts beautifully under the light, which, paired with light pink ribbons, presents a dreamlike magical feel overall. The white flowers worn on the side of the head and the long ribbons with a lace texture also add motion to the static frame. The tiny plush white rabbit doll on the floor serves as a very clever interactive element, adding a touch of childlike fun and cuteness to the originally cool and distant setting.

Regarding the lighting for this shoot, we executed a rather sophisticated setup. A wooden, warm-yellow antique lantern was placed on the left; this warm light shining on the face makes the skin tone look incredibly soft, while simultaneously bringing out a narrative context of quiet waiting. To balance the frame, we added some cool blue fill light to the back right and even the overall ambient light. This contrast of mixed warm yellow and cool blue light perfectly creates that cool and mysterious aura belonging to the Moon Palace. The photographer used two types of composition when framing. One is a wide full shot that captures the background lattice lines, the adjacent low bamboo tea table, the green incense burner, and the white vase, highlighting a quiet and elegant atmosphere. The other is a half-body close-up like the cover, which better focuses on the character's gaze and fine details, such as the texture of the handheld prop and the pairing of the skirt hem and ruffled socks.

For the Touhou Project series, Houraisan Kaguya's character setting has always deeply fascinated me. Her innate nobility and the sense of distant aura enveloping her, presented through this carefully crafted set and costume, marked a highly meaningful externalization experience for me. On the day of the shoot, my entire state was deeply immersed, and the costume and scene achieved a high degree of visual unity. In particular, the smoothness of the long straight hair and the curvature of the bangs were also key details for this photo set to ultimately present an excellent effect. I hope this sense of moonlight, carrying both a touch of antiquity and a fairytale atmosphere, can bring a slightly different visual experience to everyone as part of this Anime cosplay journey.
