This set of Patchouli cosplay works involved many carefully considered details from preparation to shooting. Since I decided to cosplay this purple-haired witch from Touhou Project, I wanted to express a quiet yet subtly playful atmosphere. For makeup, I deliberately chose a translucent base paired with thin-framed metallic glasses. While emphasizing an intellectual disposition, it also makes the gaze appear brighter and softer even when not smiling.
The outfit section embraces a highly maidenly Lolita outfit style. I selected a light purple and pink wig and trimmed the bang curves. The headpiece is an oversized pink lace ruffle adorned with handmade pearls and delicate bead strands—a feature that shines brilliantly in close-ups, perfectly fitting the character's thematic feel. The top has numerous layers, featuring tonal light pink and light purple tulle paneling, with abundant lace frills on cuffs and neckline echoing the purple and blue bows on the chest. The lower skirt features blue-purple stripes trimmed with delicate white lace, accented by burgundy ribbons for a pop of color, establishing rich layers within a macaron color palette. White over-the-knee stockings are an essential element; in seated compositions like the third image, leg lines and the soft reflection off the white stockings balance the dress's weightiness, giving the look an airier feel.
For this photoshoot environment, we sought out a retro European indoor venue. Carved wooden mirrors, translucent white lace curtains, exquisite vintage ironwork furniture, and extensive soft-toned floral arrangements—such as light blue hydrangeas, pink roses, and yellow accent blooms scattered across the bed and foreground—provided a conservatory-like dreamy base tone for these photos in Anime-style photography. I also prepared several hardcover vintage books as props; in the third photo, sitting at the bed's edge with a book in hand and legs extended forward, the white stockings look remarkably textured under soft lighting. These books serve not only as key visual elements in the frame, but also because Patchouli herself is closely tied to knowledge and magicians, holding a book helped me find the character's mindset more naturally during Roleplay. In the close-up lying on the bed, I deliberately added a wink, breaking the stereotype of her as merely quiet to inject a touch of subtle wickedness and playfulness unique to Touhou Project.
On the photography front, this was another collaboration with @雾雨若叶 (@KirisameWakaba). His lighting control always gives me total peace of mind. We used large sheets of white gauze on site to soften the natural light, making the light falling on my face extremely gentle with no harsh transition lines between highlight and shadow, allowing me to stay exceptionally relaxed before the camera. Whether lounging, sitting formally, or casually extending legs toward the lens, he always found great angles to capture the fluttering hemline and fine fold details. During the shoot, I frequently adjusted the collar bows or tidied the skirt's white tulle; since Lolita outfit cosplay costumes carry immense detail, any slight oversight can look messy, so keeping every lace trim in its proper place was essential to presenting pristine quality in the final photos.
The overall tone of these final shots leans warm—a retro cream palette that creates a wondrous harmony with the cool-toned light purple hair and blue-purple dress, resembling an afternoon reading moment frozen in time. Every beautiful outfit and every corresponding set exists to help a character step out from the 2D plane into reality, even if just for a fleeting moment of restoration—this is perhaps the true heart of cosplay. I hope the literary air and lazy tranquility captured in these frames allow you to feel the true essence of Patchouli.
