The concept for this studio shoot was bringing an in-game E-sports girl persona into the physical world, leaning stylistically into Cyberpunk and inZOI Anime-style photography to evoke an indoor atmosphere both gritty and grounded in everyday reality.
For styling, I chose a wine-red sleeveless high-neck top to brighten the upper torso, paired with a black glossy leather skirt and semi-sheer black pantyhose. Patent-like glossy textures reflect intensely under studio strobes, requiring deliberate angles to prevent blown-out specular highlights while preserving the distinct sheen of the leather. The black-rimmed glasses added a touch of otaku and intellectual charm, while the black rhinestone-studded stilettos served as the crowning detail, even though holding poses in them drained substantial stamina.
The set design bypassed complicated backdrops, opting instead for a composite space resembling an office or records archive using black pegboards, an office desk, metal shelving, a globe, and scattered archive boxes with vintage newspapers. Paired with cool-toned ambient lighting, this setup effectively conveyed the high-tech, low-life contrast characteristic of Cyberpunk. A liquor bottle and a rocks glass filled with ice casually resting on the desk also infused narrative depth into the composition.
The core visual element was the dramatic light and shadow filtering through venetian blinds. Sharp, linear slatted lighting sliced across the subject and background, injecting intense theatrical tension directly into the frame. To maximize these chiaroscuro effects, I experimented with sitting on the desk surface, curling up on the rug, and crouching down to sift through filing boxes. Crouching in a tight leather skirt and stilettos was quite demanding—not only maintaining equilibrium, but also adjusting the skirt hem to prevent wardrobe malfunctions. The texture of the stockings performed brilliantly under such hard lighting, subtly revealing skin luster as leg lines emerged with heightened definition through the interplay of light and shade.
Throughout the session, I also explored diverse emotional beats—from detached stares directly into the lens and head-bowed contemplation to focused absorption while adjusting props—striving for layered emotional resonance across every shot. Often, grand gestures or broad smiles aren't needed; sitting quietly and letting the window light carve the silhouette naturally creates a captivating mood. For post-production, the creative intent was to preserve cool gray shadows while emphasizing warm yellow highlights and the rich wine-red garment, yielding a heightened chromatic contrast.
This synergy of styling and set design captured the aloof presence of someone lingering alone after hours in an archive or office to sort through materials, breaking free from traditional studio constraints. For anyone who appreciates a Studio portrait or wants to explore the Cyberpunk aesthetic, capitalizing on the striped shadows of venetian blinds and the tactile clash of leather skirt and black stockings can deliver truly striking visual impact.
