The shooting location was selected in this hilly area covered with pink muhly grass. The terrain is open and undulating, and the intertwining of pink and green under the blue sky is very healing. To fit Menma's clean and ethereal temperament, we scouted many locations, finally discovering this little hillside far from the hustle and bustle, where the scene construction and character compatibility are highly synchronized.
The styling mainly features "pure white" and "lightness." The silver-white waist-length straight hair is the soul; the wig worn was trimmed and combed so the strands carry a smooth luster. The costume is a sleeveless, pure white ruffled dress, with two blue satin ribbons on the chest serving as visual anchors to brighten the global monotone palette. When putting on this outfit and walking up the grassy slope, there was truly a moment where it felt like stepping into that memory belonging to summer.
The wind was quite strong on the day of the shoot; because there was no blockage on the mountain, the wind blew the wig and skirt hem all over the place, but it also perfectly captured that inadvertent agility of the character. I requested the photographer to schedule the time around 3 PM, utilizing side-backlight to outline the character's contour. The set of shots blowing bubbles actually consumed quite a bit of energy; that blue bubble gun prop blew bubbles of different sizes and was easily disturbed by the wind direction. To address this issue, we adjusted the shutter speed, cooperating with the backlight to capture those bubbles reflecting rainbow halos in mid-air, adding a touch of dreaminess to the frame.
The sitting pose photo took more thought, because the grass was relatively high, and when sitting down, the white skirt hem easily sank into the vegetation or creased. In post-processing, we focused on adjusting the light and shadow layers, dimming the surrounding sharp light to make the skin texture under backlight appear softer and more translucent, while deliberately restraining the gaze with a bit of coolness. Actually, I don't like to make overly exaggerated expressions; I feel the most touching part of this character lies precisely in that demeanor of waiting quietly—with light in her eyes but without clamor. Standing there as the wind blows past is enough to form a natural interaction.
The entire cosplay photoshoot did not arrange too many complex positioning movements, focusing more on capturing emotional body language. For instance, turning back, lowering the head, or quietly staring ahead. Every shoot of Menma is a process of emotional resonance with the original work; without needing forced effort, naturally integrating into those settings and the wind often achieves the best visual effect. Photography is, after all, a highly physically demanding job; from hair and makeup, transition, finding angles, to photo selection and color grading in post, every frame needs careful polishing. But seeing the refraction of sunlight piercing through the bubbles in the final prints, as well as the fusion of that pink flower ocean and the silver-white silhouette on the grass, makes all the effort deeply meaningful. I look forward to this quiet and beautiful visual expression letting everyone perceive this gentleness during this Anime-style photography journey.
