"Will the distant wind stop for me?" This line seems to have found a concrete response in today's studio photography session. For today's cosplay photoshoot, we chose an indoor set, focusing on a warm and gorgeous texture. Actually, putting on this costume was quite a challenge, especially that hood with cat ears. Although it's highly accurate, together with the silver-white wig, it adds quite a bit of weight to the head. It really takes tensed nerves to maintain a good angle before the lens without shifting out of place. However, seeing the moment where light and shadow interweave in the final cuts makes all the hard work completely worth it.
Special thanks this time to photographer Lao Wang. He has been trying different lighting expressions with his Nikon recently, and the warm yellow main light source he set up this time carries so much warmth. This lighting not only reflects the golden wrinkled fabric on the ground into a dazzling radiance but also beautifully brings out Aglaea's gentle and elegant temperament. We also used reflectors on site to supplement some light and shadow; the golden hair and my silver-white hair presented completely distinct yet mutually complementing textures under this warm color tone.
Partnering up with Aglaea felt amazing. Our eye contact and distance control during the shoot added a lot of narrative plots to the frames. For example, in the last set of photos where we sat on the floor, the moment her hand gently caressed the top of my head, paired with the gorgeous golden necklace and soft white gauze skirt she wore, formed a powerful visual contrast with my black, white, blue, and gold military uniform style, yet it was wonderfully harmonious. We rolled around on the floor adjusting our postures just to find an angle that best embodied intimacy without making the clothing folds look abrupt.
We actually encountered a few minor interludes during the shoot. For instance, that golden sphere prop had an extremely strong surface reflection, which always tended to form harsh highlights in the lens. We had to try elevating the prop and adjusting the camera position just to soften the reflected light. As for that massive white bowl-shaped prop, though its shape is perfect for this courtly atmospheric style, moving and positioning it was truly a piece of physical labor.
Honestly, every time I cosplay a 2D character with a certain fantasy color, it feels like a short journey. From organizing the hairstyle in the morning, carefully adjusting the tightness of the shoulder armor, checking the stitched edges of the collar, to confirming whether every single strap fits snuglyāevery detail is an effort to stay as close to the character's core as possible. Personally, I really love that blue-and-pink gradient shoulder armor disc on the costume, as well as the metallic claw-mark decorations on the black gloves; these greatly enhance the character's realism.
This set of photos today contains both close-up demeanor snapshots and wide-scene atmospheric captures. After running non-stop for more than half the day, although we were indeed exhausted by the end of the shoot, everyone smiled at each other when seeing the satisfying playbacks from various angles on the camera screen. The process of photography is about constantly finding that moment of resonance; the final cuts have warmth and a sense of dialogue. Huge thanks to my partner who completed this shoot with me and the always patient photographer Lao Wang. I hope the images organized later will allow everyone to feel the charm of this character.
