This shoot was an attempt at Yao Guang's outfit featuring traditional Chinese elements. From the feather-like decorations on the wig to the blue-and-white gradient of the skirt hem, the accuracy of the details is quite exquisite. The venue chosen was a real-life studio equipped with folding screens and porcelain vases; the color scheme of blue-and-white porcelain and deep blue satin perfectly echoed the character's cool tones.
During the shoot, I specifically asked the photographer, Sumidagawa Senji, to use rim lighting, creating a distinct division between light and shadow. As that beam of light fell onto my legs and the skirt hem, the texture and layering popped out instantly. For props, I held that deep blue folding fan and the flower branches from the blue-and-white porcelain vase, trying to capture a static sense of aloofness and subtle melancholy. A bit of smoke effect was added to the standing pose shot, aiming to better match the hazy and illusory atmosphere of the "River of Forgetfulness."
Because the outfit features an off-the-shoulder and lace-up design, my movements couldn't be too large, so most shots relied on sitting poses and gazes to convey emotions. The tattoo stickers on my arms and the rhinestone sandals on my feet were also deliberately coordinated to prevent the overall look from being too plain. When shooting characters with a sense of storytelling like this, the most important thing isn't how exaggerated the poses are, but rather the gaze and body relaxation; simply downcasting your eyes or looking up at the camera can bring out the character's inner temperament. This full set took about three hours to shoot. Since the light shifted quickly, snapshot efficiency was crucial, thanks to the photographer's control. In the end, I picked out these few frames during photo selection; the light, shadow atmosphere, and expressions really hit the spot for me. Hope you enjoy this blend of Chinese-style Science Fiction and Cosplay photography for a beautiful Anime-style portrait!
