Finally finished grading this night portrait series! Taking on Miss Yamada (Tayama) from 'Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You', the concept captures an exhausted worker smoking by the supermarket back door after her shift. To capture that authentic slice of life, we scouted a late-night convenience store and the riverside.
For hair and makeup, to achieve that effortless, melancholic allure, I paired a simple form-fitting white tee with high-waisted denim shorts, anchored by sheer Black stockings and off-white pointed chunky ankle boots. Wearing these heels across riverside cobblestones was tiring, but the glossy texture on the stockings and clean leg lines made it worthwhile. Adding a studded black leather O-ring choker, draping the oversized Leather jacket outfit off the shoulders, and styling a reddish-brown twin-tail wig with shoulder-duster earrings instantly shed her daytime customer-service façade in favor of Tayama's rebellious soul. Heavily smudged smoky eyeshadow and draped blush conveyed a hazy, bone-tired gaze, perfectly embodying an office worker catching her first breath of freedom.
Mood and lighting were paramount. Props included a vintage cigarette pack and a lit cigarette—smoke drifting under on-location strobe flashes created tactile depth while reflecting quiet vulnerability. Shot on a Canon EOS R5 Mark II paired with an RF 35mm F1.4L VCM, the wide aperture excelled at night, keeping body proportions natural while absorbing the ambient neon bokeh of the convenience store and city skyline. Strobes were flagged to underexpose background spill, yielding high-contrast chiaroscuro. Outside the store, slouching on steps or kneeling with the leather jacket slipping off exposed shoulders created strong narrative tension. Moving to the riverbank railings and mooring bollards, night breezes tossed the twin-tails against glittering bridge lights. Graded in Capture One to balance warm ambient glows with cool shadows, this set preserves natural skin texture while highlighting the tactile sheen of leather and stockings. A quiet, honest tribute to midnight solace.
