This time it's a makeup test for Castorice, which is commonly referred to as the "costume trial" stage. The main purpose is to confirm whether the wig trimming, makeup direction, and accessory proportions align with the character design. Since it's just a cosplay makeup test, the details on the collarbone, shoulders, and neck areas haven't had their final skin processing yet, such as stickers or special effects makeup. Everyone can just focus on the completion of the face and hairstyle for now!
For the wig, I chose light purple-gray high-temperature fiber. To recreate Castorice's fluffy and airy bangs, I layered and thinned the ends, and used hair wax to create a slightly curled texture, which gives a soft scattered light effect in front of the lens. The black diamond-patterned hair accessory and gems on the top of my head were made using 3D-printed bases that I printed myself, and then I hand-inlaid them with pearlescent patches so that the gloss would be closer to the textures in the game. The black bow ribbon by the ear required repeated adjustments to its curve; to keep it from collapsing, a thin iron wire was hidden inside to shape it.
In terms of makeup, the core of the eye makeup is the purple-brown blending that elongates the outer corners of the eyes, paired with light-colored contacts to make the gaze look more ethereal. For the lips, a clear lip gloss was layered over a light purple base to create a cool-toned yet soft texture. The bow tie was hand-stitched from pearlescent sequin fabric, and a stiffened lining cloth was used for the inner lining to prevent it from folding or bending when worn. For the flower accessory on the chest, I sculpted it using multiple colors of ultra-light clay and then brushed it with pearlescent paint, so that it reflects different colors under different lighting.
The lighting for the trial used a ring light at a close distance, so the facial shadows are relatively flat, but there will be better three-dimensionality during actual location shooting. The shoulder straps of this outfit have a cutout design, so during the formal shoot later on, I will do more precise skin tone coverage on the shoulders and collarbone to make the joints look more natural. Overall, this test went quite smoothly; although the hairstyle is still a little frizzy, the flaws do not hide its merits, and I already have a complete concept for the final photos in my mind.
Actually, every makeup test is a process of re-establishing a connection with the character, from understanding her background story to recreating the details of her every piece of clothing and accessory, and even simulating her faint sense of detachment. This process requires a lot of preparation, including listening to character voice lines and analyzing character psychology. I hope this trial allows everyone to see a more multi-dimensional Castorice. For the subsequent official photoshoot, I will bring complete scene props and full-body effects, so please look forward to Little Butterfly's transformation for this piece of Honkai: Star Rail cosplay and Anime cosplay.
