This photo set of Arknights Shu cosplay was shot in a Golden wheat field. The inspiration for this shoot stemmed primarily from the imagery of harvest and farmlands, paired with the character's distinctive hair color and horn ornaments from the original design, aiming to present an atmosphere deeply connected to nature and the earth. To achieve the best outcome, after discussing with the photographer, we scheduled the shoot for a later time slot to take better advantage of Night portrait lighting techniques. The shooting process was actually quite grueling—the daytime was hot while the night grew humid, and moving through the dense brush was difficult. The mature wheat stalks were stiff with sharp edges, constantly scraping my legs and arms, so I had to remain mindful not to let the sting disrupt my expressions, which was truly a test of both physical stamina and expressive control.
In terms of costume, the most challenging part of this outfit lay in the headpiece and horns. The horns in particular carry noticeable weight, requiring numerous bobby pins and adhesive to secure firmly, making the entire hair and makeup process take over two hours. Once equipped, however, paired with the long blonde hair and blue gradient highlights, the visual impact was immediate. The white outfit looked remarkably ethereal under intense lighting, with geometric checkered squares on the chest and necklace accessories adding rich layers, while the waist sash not only sculpted the silhouette but also imparted fluid motion during movement. The long orange glove on the right arm with blue line accents was also packed with detail. For props, I posed for many shots with the longsword; because of its considerable length, wielding it and finding the right angles in the brush took significant effort, all while ensuring the light-catching plane of the blade looked beautiful.
Since the shooting environment was dark, to simulate natural backlighting streaming across the wheat field, the photographer set up several warm-toned fill lights in the rear. This lighting technique made the surrounding Golden wheat field background pop vividly—almost as if the wheat itself were glowing—infusing the photos with a dreamy, serene ambiance. To showcase the character's poised yet powerful demeanor, I tried various poses—such as raising an arm, cradling a bundle of wheat ears, or glancing back toward the lens. Though the preparations and photoshoot were tedious, seeing the atmosphere rendered in the finished photos made every effort feel rewarding. This shoot was not only an expression of love for the character, but also a great test of team coordination. Standing in this boundless Golden wheat field, holding props and feeling the real natural environment allowed for a deeper immersion into character.
For Anime cosplay themes rich in organic natural atmosphere, selecting the right location and lighting is crucial. We communicated extensively with the photographer beforehand to figure out how to shape a strong volumetric sense of backlighting with only dim ambient light. In post-production, we fine-tuned the color palette, focusing on golden saturation and highlight control to ensure the wheat field appeared lush and warm without losing facial contours. For an Anime cosplay character, costume fidelity is fundamental, while translating 2D poses and expressions into the 3D world remains an ongoing artistic challenge. This shoot marked our second visit to this field—the first attempt was rained out, so we were grateful the weather cooperated this time. Many subtle details required attention during shooting, such as the swaying waves of wheat when walking and holding the wheat stalks naturally without looking staged. The lighting assistant also helped balance the lighting ratio, as nighttime contrast can easily cause facial underexposure or blown-out highlights on white clothing. Consequently, I constantly adjusted my position and body angles to catch that perfect beam of light. That is perhaps the greatest charm and challenge of on-location Night portrait photography. After hours of hard work, everyone was exhausted, but the moment the final shots emerged, all fatigue vanished completely.
