Taking advantage of the overcast sky without direct sunlight on the second day of CP, I managed to capture this specific setup for Mizuki. The perk of cloudy weather is that the light is super soft, so there's no need to battle harsh sunshine or mess with complicated reflectors; the light distribution on the face is very smooth, making the skin tone look incredibly translucent. Throughout this convention, I used the Sony A7M5 paired with the 24-70mm GM2 lens, and shooting with just one lens from start to finish felt absolutely amazing. I used to bring a 24-70mm, an 85mm prime, and a 16-35mm, but swapping lenses when the convention crowd gets dense is an absolute frantic mess, not to mention worrying about dust. This 24-70mm GM2 covers the most common focal lengths from wide-angle to mid-telephoto, allowing me to transition effortlessly between environmental portraits and half-body close-ups.
A lot of costume details were restored for this shoot: the white translucent techwear hooded sweatshirt, the spliced transparent PVC cuffs, the prominent fluorescent green neck ring, plus the black tight sports leggings with white lettering and bright yellow shoelaces. The overall color block contrast is actually quite strong; a slight mishap in exposure control with this combo could be a total disaster. However, the Sony A7M5's straight-out-of-camera colors and dynamic range gave me a huge sense of security—basically, it only needed minor exposure tweaks to be ready, leaving very little post-processing pressure. When shooting street techwear characters like this, finding the right location is crucial. I intentionally avoided the high-density, chaotic backdrops inside the convention hall and headed out to the highway underpass and roadside green belts outside the venue. The off-white concrete piers and thick load-bearing pillars under the overpass carry an inherent industrial structural aesthetic, perfectly matching the tone of Mizuki's styling for this Cosplay photography project.
To bring out a sense of dynamism, aside from standing still and posing, I also tried some movements like lifting one leg or reaching up to grab the hood. Since the weather wasn't hot, wearing the coat for a long time wasn't too uncomfortable, and my shooting condition remained fully on point. While reviewing the playbacks, I found that the Sony A7M5's eye autofocus is exceptionally stable; capturing these lightweight actions resulted in virtually zero missed focus. Moreover, this body is relatively lightweight, so my wrists didn't feel tired even after holding it all day—it is absolute gold for convention street snaps and outdoor shoots. I hope this set of outdoor photos conveys Mizuki's refreshing yet slightly cool and sharp atmosphere. It also shares a thought with my fellow photography enthusiasts: gear is about quality over quantity. Pushing a single zoom lens to its absolute limit is often way more comfortable than running around with a bunch of prime lenses for an Anime convention check-in.
