[Jane Doe cosplay] Zenless Zone Zero Jane Doe — A Moment of Relaxation Between Guises

The character concept of Jane Doe is filled with the tension of being "between guises," and the relaxing atmosphere around her birthday allowed me to capture that lazy ease once she lets her guard down. Today, I fully immersed myself in this mindset to bring out those personality fragments hidden within the outfit's details.

Let's start with this striking techwear outfit. The iconic cropped cyan jacket on top features a fluffy white collar that looks soft to the touch, but paired with tough leather buckles and hanging black shoulder straps, it immediately blends street fashion with combat practicality. Underneath is a black cropped base top that flatters the waistline, which, paired with the black choker and halter strap at the neck, keeps the visual focus firmly centered. For the lower half, black leather techwear shorts with a belt featuring distressed metal buckles and rivets add rich, layered detail.

Further down is one of my favorite parts of this look: the leg design. These black-and-grey techwear tights with distinct geometric patchwork patterns reflect different sheens from various angles, while the light-colored knee pads seamlessly recreate the tactical attributes from the character design, giving the legs a balance of softness and power. With black leather thigh garters and thin suspender straps, matched with grey-and-red chunky platform combat boots, her presence is fully felt even just lounging on a sofa.

Of course, the most indispensable element of this cosplay is that iconic long tail. The main body of the tail is cyan-grey, tapering into a sharp red triangular arrow tip; achieving a natural yet sleek curve with this material and shape required careful technique during the shoot. To solve this, I repeatedly adjusted the harness tension and anchor points during prep so that it looked both like a natural part of the body and held a clean shape on camera. The animal ears accessory is also fascinating—the pink and grey color contrast adds a touch of playful charm, which, together with the iconic black short hair with straight bangs, makes the character's silhouette instantly distinct.

The set design was also carefully arranged to match the vintage yet surreal aesthetic of the character. Vintage CRT TVs and black audio equipment, alongside a cozy brown leather sofa, created the atmosphere of her private hideout. Under the blue neon lights and ambient studio lighting, the cyan color of the jacket was brought out with rich saturation, while my skin looked fair and translucent.

The props prepared this time were full of everyday personality. The hard white protective face mask with red-and-black clasp details looked incredibly textured under indoor lighting; biting down on it conveyed the character's wild, uninhibited edge. Meanwhile, a red-and-white tactical knife paired with a poised sitting posture accurately captured the intimidating aura of a close-combat master.

The most amusing prop was definitely the bowl of ramen. Holding this steaming bowl with wooden chopsticks instantly shifted the vibe from fierce fighter to an adorable foodie in everyday life. This strong contrast brought the character to life with even greater vitality. For the ramen scene, I stood in front of a bookshelf filled with manga and books; the colorful spines paired with warm lighting created a cozy, everyday atmosphere. Switching moods like this made the photoshoot dynamic and fun.

In portraying Jane Doe, I tried to tap into the duality of "she is formidable, yet right now she just wants to unwind." For makeup, I emphasized lake-blue eyes, keeping the gaze sharp yet crystal clear. Rather than making exaggerated or overly fierce expressions, I maintained a cool, composed ease. Shutter after shutter, by managing my body's center of gravity and line of sight, I transitioned from conscious posing into a truly effortless flow.

For me, this client photoshoot was not only a recreation of costume and props, but also a deep appreciation of the character's core. She is cool, but she gets tired; she is dangerous, but she can also curl up on a sofa playing with props. Putting together this Jane Doe cosplay on the special occasion of her birthday is a meaningful tribute both to her and to myself. Every movement and glance adjustment during the shoot felt like a silent dialogue with the character.
