This time, I'm bringing you the finished Herta cosplay set from Honkai: Star Rail. From making the costume props to selecting the venue and shooting, it took a lot of preparation. The difficulty of recreating this look was mainly reflected in the texture of the fabric and the complexity of the accessories. The black-and-white stitching on the upper half, the off-shoulder design, and the heart-shaped metal pendant needed to remain secure during event locations and intense multi-angle photography. The floral decoration on the purple witch hat also went through multiple selections; in the end, petals with a velvet texture were chosen, which matched the overall mysterious vibe perfectly.
Regarding makeup, the focus this time was on the eye makeup and contact lens pairing. Blue-purple pupils were used to emphasize the character's exotic feel and mysterious traits, while the red blending at the outer corners of the eyes made facial contours more three-dimensional, echoing the background of red threads in light and shadow. Managing the silver wig was quite a hassle, but the resulting fluffiness and layering were truly key to making it look amazing in front of the lens.
As for the staff prop, to be honest, mastering its balance in hand required a bit of technique. The hollowed white base paired with golden butterfly accents produces different reflective effects under various light refractions. To capture the best synergy between the staff and the overall costume, we tried several standing poses. The black laced-up knee-high boots and their platform thickness brought the overall height proportions to an ideal ratio, and paired with a hint of fishnet black stockings on the legs, it maintained the character's signature elegance while making it easy to move around in the dark set.
The shooting environment was specially arranged with suspended iron chains and dark red thorny vines spreading everywhere; the clash of purple and red in dark lighting was extremely eye-catching. Light struck from the side, illuminating the silver-white cuffs and neckline design of the costume, bringing out that premium, translucent texture. Throughout the process, everyone kept adjusting angles, aiming to convey that calm yet slightly flamboyant sense of control emanating from the character.
In addition, this outfit performs quite differently in outdoor backlighting versus high-contrast indoor flash units. The dark background chosen this time gave the metal accents and glittering patches on the costume better room to shine. Transporting gear and tidying up the complex skirt hem was physical labor, but seeing the staggered red threads in the final photos serving as foreground obstructions and background atmosphere made all the hard work feel worth it. When shooting characters with a fantasy style outfit that leans toward magic and mystery, the richer the layers of the costume, the stronger the final visual tension.
The set design on the shooting day included not only chains dangling from above, but also dark vines wrapped around the frame. The photographer put a lot of effort into the set to make the red threads appear naturally suspended. As for the overall styling and accessories, from the black collar around the neck to the chains encircling the chest, down to the buckles on gloves and boots, every detail was recreated with maximum precision. During actual shooting, to match the black-and-white patterned totem design on the floor, the standing position was specially adjusted so the skirt could spread out right over the pattern.
The dim, shadowy atmosphere of the entire scene fit the setting of a magical world exceptionally well. Immersing myself in the character state throughout, the visual effect of total control shown in the final photos was just as expected. When adjusting the camera focal length, the lines of the outfit and props in an out-of-focus state created a great sense of depth, boosting the visual tension of the photo set. Looking back at the screen during the shoot, that gaze of mastering everything felt exceptionally focused with the support of light and shadow, giving all these meticulously crafted costumes and props a final sense of belonging.
