Putting on the summer gear for Alice and Yuzuha and dashing to the beach, the vacation's sense of ritual officially kicked off the moment we changed into our swimwear. Playing in the water by the sea is genuinely joyful. Even though the direct sunlight made me feel like I was turning into a tanned black rabbit, as long as the photos turn out great, enduring a bit of UV rays is totally worth it. After all, for cosplayers, the biggest fear is melting makeup. Running around on the beach made us sweat a lot, but thankfully the base makeup and setting were locked in tight, preventing any smudging.
The costume details for this summer special are faithfully reproduced, featuring many eye-catching color schemes. The plush heart on the chest and the bright balls on the shoulders maximize the character's playful charm, making it perfect for shooting against the backdrop of a pure blue sky and turquoise ocean. The studded choker with charms around the neck, as well as the swim-ring wrist accessories, required extra caution while moving along the shore for fear of losing them in the sand. Fortunately, the natural lighting was superb that day. Under the perfect sunlight, the fabric's color temperature gained a rich texture—the whites didn't look washed out at all, and the combination of pink and black popped brilliantly by the water.
We walked down the sand toward the water's edge while adjusting our poses. Aside from shooting regular full photos, we intentionally brought along a Polaroid camera to capture warm, tangible keepsake photos you can hold in your hands. The finished Polaroid shown in the picture really tested our improvisation, as we had to quickly find the right angle amidst the distractions of waves and wind. The natural backdrop of blue sky, open sea, and distant green hills felt incredibly serene—a natural setting you don't encounter in every outdoor cosplay shoot. Without sunscreen, wearing this outfit for a full day might tan you by two shades, but seeing those candid smiles and relaxed gestures in the final results made everything completely worthwhile.
Cosplay in an authentic outdoor location offers a completely different vibe compared to a studio shoot. Studio shoots rely on artificial lighting and staged ambiance, whereas outdoor shoots rely on interaction with nature. When the sea breeze ruffles your hair, there's no need to constantly flatten it down—that fluffy lightness actually captures the vibrant, dynamic spirit of a summer seashore. Many times, pressing the shutter at the beach is not just completing a shoot; it is capturing a state of living.
There were plenty of fun, amusing moments during the outdoor shoot, like accidentally stepping into water puddles on wet sand or strong gusts nearly blowing our wigs off. Yet, it's precisely these quirks that make the whole set look authentic and effortless. The Polaroid tones come with an innate film-like texture that gives off a vintage feel without any editing. Teaming up with my partner was effortless with great synergy; our interactions and candid snapshots felt seamless. We didn't need to strike overly complicated poses—just flashing a peace sign or tilting our heads at the camera let the summer ambiance naturally overflow.
During this summer trip, the costume fabrics were relatively light and breathable, but continuous shooting in the sultry afternoon heat still left us a bit winded. However, the moment you look out at the white crests rolling across the deep blue water, or puffy white clouds drifting overhead, all fatigue instantly melts away. Honestly, if you want to pull off this kind of theme for summer beach photography, finding a cloudless island or beach is key—the natural light and scenery become your best post-processing tool.
In the end, to keep our entire gear intact, we walked back and forth along the beach quite a few times. Whenever our feet got tired, we took brief rests under a beach umbrella, reviewing the freshly developed Polaroids to reminisce over those joyful moments.
