This Saigyouji Yuyuko cosplay photo set was shot during an indoor studio session last month. Having just finished sorting through the raw files today, I wanted to share some thoughts and behind-the-scenes details. Within Touhou Project, Saigyouji Yuyuko has a very distinctive temperament in canon lore—seemingly elegant yet tinged with melancholy and mystique—which posed quite a challenge for hair, makeup, and expression control.
Regarding styling, I chose a short pink wig with a slightly softer tone than canon, primarily to harmonize with the overall cool-toned lighting setup. The mob cap was custom-made: dark blue fabric paired with white lace trimming and floral ornaments at the crown, lending a rich classical aesthetic. For the costume, the high-neck white lace dress with dark bead accents along the collar offered wonderful texture.
During the shoot, we mainly adopted side-profile angles. The photographer suggested looking downward, ignoring the camera lens, which gracefully elongated my neckline while making my gaze appear more desolate and lonely. The eye makeup was the highlight of this set: defined lower lashes paired with painted tear streaks made the character's fragile vulnerability tangible, perfectly echoing her emotional tone.
To give this photo set a stronger narrative feel, we spent substantial effort on lighting. A single key light was positioned from the upper left, using shadows to carve out facial contours; this contrast between light and dark gave my face greater dimension, and the play of light falling across the brim and cheeks achieved the shadowy, somber Atmosphere we wanted. Pink blossoms were placed in the background to create soft bokeh blur, establishing a warm-cool contrast with the cool-toned subject. The black book prop held in hand heightened the mystique as one of the character's iconic elements.
Portraying a character with such a melancholic demeanor tests emotional pacing most of all. Since it requires expressing faint sorrow rather than dramatic weeping, the gaze needed to be distant and spaced out, while facial expressions remained restrained. Between takes, I listened to soothing music to recalibrate my mood, and thankfully the team worked together seamlessly.
In post-processing, the color grading leaned toward cool grayish tones with reduced saturation, gently darkening the periphery to emphasize the subject while adding a subtle film grain for a vintage, dreamlike aesthetic. This crisp, ethereal visual effect fits the 2D character beautifully.
Overall, this was a fantastic photoshoot experience. While physically tiring, everyone paid meticulous attention to detail—from accessory placement to skirt pleats—striving for the highest fidelity. The lens perspective and lighting Atmosphere met all expectations, and I'm very satisfied with the final captures.
Beyond this set of finished photos, we also experimented with a few other poses on set, such as holding a parasol and touching blossoms. I will share those once retouching is complete!
