I recently shot a set of Sakuya Izayoi cosplay photos, choosing to complete self-portraits inside a car. The car interior is actually a very special space—dark with strong directional light, perfectly accentuating the contrast between white lace and dark fabrics.
In terms of makeup and styling, I wore blue contact lenses to restore the character's eye color features, paired with orange-pink eyeshadow and low-saturation lip color to keep the overall face clean and sharp. In Touhou Project lore, the head maid is designed as capable and elegant, so the makeup cannot appear overly youthful; it must convey a cool, composed demeanor with smooth, natural shadow transitions.
For the wig, I selected short white hair, thinning and sectioning it to create a fluffy, lightweight layered structure. Thin braids were styled on both sides hugging the cheeks to flatter face contours. For headwear, I added a dark blue base ribbon trimmed with a firm white lace ruffle along the edge, allowing the headpiece to stand upright and present a gorgeous yet unbloated visual effect.
For outfit coordination, I chose navy blue lace-spliced sleeves and shoulders, forming a classic maid and master color scheme alongside the white folded lace collar. The dark green bow on the chest served as the visual focal point of the entire ensemble, specifically crafted from stiff satin fabric, pleated, and fixed with a brooch, with an exquisite light blue gemstone embedded in the center.
Additionally, dark green hair bows on both sides by the ears featured matching materials and gemstone embellishments; this top-to-bottom echoing design raised the overall look's completeness. The silver Pocket watch held in my hand served as an essential prop; finding the right hanging angle for its fine chain during posing was crucial to avoid obscuring facial features. The action of adjusting the Pocket watch dial itself carried the character's core spirit.
Because this shoot was entirely self-operated, composition remained tight, primarily highlighting upper body details. Lighting originated mainly from natural sunlight outside the car window, casting beautiful outline highlights across white lace and the silver Pocket watch. Dark ambient tones pushed the main subject and props into the visual foreground, resulting in a comfortable contrast between dark and bright hues.
The character Sakuya Izayoi inherently possesses a mysterious and composed demeanor, looking as though she is ready to stop time at any second to tidy the Scarlet Devil Mansion. When capturing expressions, I maintained a slightly relaxed, focused gaze without forcing exaggerated facial expressions. Furthermore, the silver-white wig and blue eyes provided distinct recognizability, making it easy to slip into character once fully geared up.
To balance props and hand postures during filming, I adjusted camera angles repeatedly. When the prop Pocket watch caught the lens closely, it reflected a subtle metallic gleam that complemented the customized dark blue and dark green Maid outfit, presenting a gorgeous aesthetic infused with retro charm. The entire styling process—from trimming the wig and layering headwear to adjusting the fit of navy lace sleeves against the white neckline—demanded meticulous control.
Shooting inside a relatively cramped space like a car heavily relies on familiarity with camera angles. Fortunately, interior light creates an effect similar to studio dark-backdrop setups, with occasional sunbeams hitting the Pocket watch to enhance frame vitality. Utilizing a car as the backdrop for the Scarlet Devil Mansion head maid cosplay yielded a deeply fitting atmosphere.
