[Ms. Tayama cosplay] Smoking Behind the Supermarket: Casual Street style Under the Night Sky

Today's outdoor photoshoot took place around the back door of a supermarket. This session featured characters related to Ms. Tayama cosplay and Miss Yamada cosplay, organized and planned by the Zoo Photography Club. We wanted to convey the character's casual and slightly rebellious vibe through everyday urban Street style scenes. For makeup and styling, to faithfully match the design, I wore a red wig with blunt bangs; trimming and styling it to look natural took considerable effort. In wardrobe coordination, I layered a pure white T-shirt knotted at the waist to expose the waistline beneath a black biker Leather jacket, paired on the bottom with black denim shorts and Black stockings. Accented with a chunky belt and dangling metallic bar earrings, the complete look radiated strong Street style flair.

The lighting contrast on the shoot day was intense, with glaring daylight. To take full advantage of the natural light, we experimented with different stances. The first setup was by a black doorframe, where sunlight carved high-contrast highlights on the white T-shirt while casting my face into shadow, delivering a distinctly cinematic feel. The second setup had me leaning against metal railings, white tiled walls, and an outdoor AC compressor unit. Using a cigarette as a prop—even though I don't smoke in real life—capturing that languid, puffing smoke mood required adjusting my hand gestures and gaze multiple times. The photographer had me slip off the Leather jacket halfway, draping it over my arm while resting my elbow on the railing and shifting my weight to one side, which beautifully highlighted the Black stockings and the contours of my legs. For the shot sitting beside the AC unit, holding the cigarette pack in hand, the textures of the wig and the Leather jacket stood out crisply under the harsh daylight.

As dusk fell, we transitioned to nighttime scenes. The lighting in the night was completely different, with urban streetlights blurring into soft bokeh in the background, while a spotlight was used to illuminate my face. Leaning against the railing with my cheek resting on my hand and a vacant gaze, the black Leather jacket melted seamlessly into the dark night backdrop. In another frame, I held a white cigarette pack reaching toward the lens, using foreground blur to enhance visual interactivity.

The trickiest part of outdoor location shoots is the unpredictable environment—people coming and going behind the supermarket, along with ever-shifting lighting angles. The Leather jacket was genuinely stuffy to wear during the day, yet quite chilly at night, and pacing outdoors all day in high heels was physically demanding. Nonetheless, collaborating with the masters at Zoo Photography Club to bring Ms. Tayama cosplay to life in real-world settings and carving out character emotions through light and shadow was an immensely fulfilling experience. Every shutter click was the result of seamless teamwork—from composition to catching fleeting expressions, the camera immortalized this character's contemplative presence in a quiet corner of the metropolis.
