[Jeanne d'Arc cosplay] Fate/Grand Order New Year 9-Grid: 2D Visual Tension of Black Dress and Longsword

For this New Year Jeanne d'Arc cosplay shoot, I chose a pure white cyclorama to create a 9-grid set. The ensemble embraces a black-and-purple Gothic style; compared to traditional heavy armor, this lightweight yet darkly ornate dress offers significantly more freedom for physical expression, making it much easier to accentuate body lines.

Let's talk about the styling details first. The silver-white wig paired with a vivid crimson hair ornament on the right creates an eye-catching statement against the minimalist black-and-white background. The headpiece is a black headband detailed with red pendants, adding a touch of delicate refinement. The bodice features a deep-V lace-up front bordered by black lace, which, combined with a black rose choker at the neck, anchors a striking visual focal point. The skirt is an asymmetrical high-low design: layered black tulle and ruffles drape over the outer shell, propped up by a deep purplish-red petticoat underneath. To complete the look, I wore over-the-knee Black stockings and stiletto ankle boots, further elongating the leg lines visually.

For props, the ornate longsword in my hands was a massive highlight. The hilt is golden, the blade engraved with fine patterns, and it is accented with hanging chains, carrying noticeable weight in hand. When posing, this physical weight actually helped ground the movements, making every stance feel far more authentic and charged with tension.

As a cosplayer frequently doing Anime-style photography, shooting against a white studio background tests your posing and expressions the most. Without a complex environment to distract the viewer, all attention locks directly onto the subject. To keep the 9-grid layout dynamic, I designed diverse postures: lifting the skirt hem with one arm raised overhead, lifting one leg while flaring out the skirt with both hands, and glancing back over my shoulder with the sword drawn. Lifting the hem looks simple, but creating picturesque layers between the sheer tulle and the purplish-red lining required repeated adjustments to wrist tension and the trajectory of the fabric. The single-leg lift demanded tight core engagement and a locked standing leg to maintain balance.

The pure white background paired with even lighting maximized the fabric's rich textures. Black lace and sheer tulle easily lose detail under harsh light, so the photographer added fill light in the shadows, ensuring crisp garment textures while keeping the purplish-red lining vibrant. To match the styling, my expressions remained cool and resolute with a sharp gaze, complementing the sword's offensive edge. To highlight the sheen of the Black stockings, we specifically adjusted lighting angles, using bounce reflections to emphasize the leg contours.

The 9-grid arrangement presented full-body, medium, and multi-angle dynamic action. Post-processing retained the raw files' punchy contrast while cleaning up stray light to keep the atmosphere pristine and sharp. Cosplaying a character with a large weapon and billowing skirt tests both stamina and focus—especially standing in stiletto boots for hours—but seeing the finished results made every effort worthwhile.
