Collaborating with photographer @CarbBlackHoleLieKongSang to find a more concrete inner expression for this "Fugue." For the set design, we specifically chose warm-toned champagne gold ginkgo leaves and a classical rosewood chair to form an intertextuality with the character's proud yet dynamic setting. In terms of color matching, the calligraphy and plum branches on the tablecloth were also intentionally selected in less saturated, darker tones to avoid stealing the visual focus from the costume.
The details of this costume, makeup, and props set are highly sophisticated. Especially these two fluffy fox ears; to ensure a natural hair flow direction from different camera angles, trimming and shaping them in advance consumed a lot of time. The overall main color palette of black, red, and gold, paired with three-dimensional golden flower ornaments on the chest and shoulders, as well as that huge pink lotus in hand, highly centralized the visual focus of the shoot. That fluffy tail also served as an excellent aid, allowing my body to look more extended and relaxed when sitting on the chair.
We repeatedly adjusted the light and shadow during the shooting process. Since harsh lighting in the studio can easily cause the styling to lose its details, we used a large amount of soft light to brighten up the gaze, creating a soft balance between the character's cool-toned fair skin and the warm ambient light. I remember when shooting those few photos on the chair, I had to carefully manage the skirt hem and the tail to present a genuine sense of being "lazy" without looking cramped. Regarding the lens focal length, we alternated between medium telephoto and wide-angle, wanting to preserve the exquisite details of her fox-style makeup on her face while showcasing the spatial relationship between the costume's large trailing hem and the props.
When interpreting the character's demeanor, I tried to capture her half-smiling, half-serious state. Fox-race characters easily fall into stereotypes of being either overly vulgar or overly aloof, so I wanted to give her gaze a bit more warmth without losing composure. The motion of pinching the flower should be gentle and slow, as if casually picked up. During the shoot, I made minor adjustments following the photographer's cues, slightly shifting my weight onto the chair or subtly raising my chin, with every tiny movement trying to find the moment that best fits the character's personality.
It really wasn't easy for this cosplay photoshoot to turn out smoothly. From the costume, makeup, and props to the set construction, and then to the post-production color grading, every stage was the result of our repeated deliberations. Although exhausting, the moment I saw the final photos, I felt all the effort was worthwhile. I hope this shared ancient style cosplay photography atmosphere allows everyone to feel the unique charm of this character. On this path of cosplay, every deep dive into a character brings me new experiences and fulfillment.
