[Violet Evergarden Cosplay] Traveler in the Streams and Forest Light of Western Sichuan

We chose Western Sichuan for this cosplay location shoot. The mountains, streams, and woods here carry a slightly cool and serene breath, and combined with the golden light unique to the afternoon golden hour, the entire environment naturally possesses a sense of storytelling. The character I am portraying this time is set as a ghostwriter who travels around to convey emotions through letters. Therefore, compared to an indoor studio shoot, an outdoor venue with streams, fallen leaves, and pine forests indeed makes it much easier to find that sense of reality on a journey during this Western Sichuan travel photography experience.

Getting fully dressed actually took quite a bit of effort. The costume has many layers—the deep blue cropped jacket, the pleated white long skirt, the cravat at the neckline, and that green gemstone ornament all needed to be adjusted to the right tightness so that my posture would look naturally upright. The high lace-up leather boots on my feet definitely required careful slip prevention when walking on muddy and rocky paths; though challenging, this outfit truly allows one to instantly get into character. The blue-and-white lace umbrella and vintage suitcase brought along also played a huge role during the shoot; they were not only props but also pivots that helped me construct my body movements.

The action of spinning while holding the umbrella in Figure 2 was actually captured in a backlit environment. That afternoon, a mountain breeze happened to blow across, which not only swept the skirt hem into a beautiful arc but also brought down fallen leaves from the woods. To master the spinning angle and allow the light to filter through the edge of the umbrella and the hair strands, we repeatedly adjusted our positioning many times. The moment the shutter was pressed, snapping the swirling autumn leaves and the interlacing light and shadow, the feeling of atmospheric photography at that instant was truly amazing.

The crouching posture by the stream in Figure 3 reflects a completely different state. As the shoot progressed into the second half, the sunlight began to soften, and I sat down on a rock by the water, letting the skirt hem spread out naturally. Surrounded only by the white noise of flowing water, I leaned forward to touch the icy stream, feeling a wonderful sense of calmness. There was no need to deliberately shape any expression; that state of taking a brief rest on a journey and observing nature was the most authentic feedback.

The close-up shot standing on the single-log bridge in Figure 1 aims to express an artistic conception of pausing and being about to continue moving forward. The halo from the depths of the forest diffused through the air. On that simple wooden bridge, holding the suitcase and gazing into the distance, I was experiencing the starting point of this unknown journey.

This trip to Western Sichuan was actually quite tiring, carrying several outfits, heavy props, and photography equipment through the mountain forests, while also dealing with mosquitoes and insects in the water and grass. But this physical exhaustion felt completely worth it when seeing the images presented in the viewfinder. The difficulty of an outdoor cosplay location shoot lies in the gamble with the environment; you need to adapt to the on-site light, wind direction, and terrain, and you cannot completely follow a studio-shooting plan. Yet, it is precisely because of these uncertainties that every outdoor shoot is filled with surprises and a unique texture.

This set of photos did not undergo any overly exaggerated post-processing color grading; it mainly preserved the authentic light and tones of the forest at that time. I hope that what is displayed through this set of photos is not just the character's appearance, but also a state of a traveler relaxing and quietly settling down in nature. After shooting this set, I have to pack my bags for the return journey. Although the journey was brief, this experience will be remembered for a very long time. Let this stand as an exquisite piece of atmospheric photography.
