This time, I revamped Kuroneko's Gothic style outfit, replacing some material details of the costume while adjusting the final color presentation. Purple hair, red eyes, Cat ears, and a tail are Gokou Ruri's most signature elements.
For the wig, I selected a matte purple tone, trimmed with suitable straight bangs and sideburns to best replicate the visual silhouette from the anime. Bright red contact lenses were chosen, creating a striking penetration in the eyes under cool-white studio lighting. The Cat ears and tail were custom-made, with the tail supported by internal wire to maintain a natural bend without sagging.
The outfit is predominantly black and white, with the outer layer made of black jacquard dark-patterned fabric that carries a vintage texture. Inside is a white lace lotus-leaf collar, with wide white bell sleeves at the cuffs. The overall silhouette is fluffy, yet cinched at the waist through precise tailoring. Accentuated by bright blue ribbons on the sleeves, it breaks the monotony of the black-and-white scheme, adding a touch of lively color visually. The multi-layered skirt offers great natural drape and fluid motion during larger movements.
During the shoot, a pure white cylindrical pedestal served as the primary support. We focused on three main poses: lifting the skirt while standing, resting a hand on the collar while seated, and looking back over the shoulder. I particularly love the seated pose set because it showcases the gray tights so well. Choosing gray over traditional black or white was meant to match the overall soft, cool-toned mood; additionally, gray tights offer excellent layering and sheen against solid backgrounds, creating a smoother transition beneath the skirt hem.
To keep the composition clean and sharp, no unnecessary complex props were used in this studio session. A large plain light-colored backdrop was selected, which allows complete visual focus on the character's styling and color palette. Before shooting, I fine-tuned the black thin ribbon bow at the neckline to ensure a layered contrast with the outer jacket's black jacquard pattern. The contrast of black and white intrinsically carries Gothic dramatic tension, and with the gray tights serving as a transition, the balance between cool and warm tones naturally emerges. Before settling on ideal angles, we tested several lighting setups, ultimately choosing a combination of overhead lighting and side fill light. This enhanced the color depth of the black dress's dark patterns while casting a soft highlight on the legs, giving the gray tights a richer texture.
Of course, the wig and long tail pulled against each other a bit while moving, but that's an inevitable part of doing cosplay. Stepping in front of the lens in full gear and seeing myself in the mirror brought a wonderfully immersive moment of stepping into the character. Although external impressions of Kuroneko often label her as venomous-tongued or tsundere, I prefer to view her as having a delicate heart hidden beneath a black shell. Throughout shooting, I stayed mindful of controlling my breath; because the outfit has many layers, a slight slack in posture causes shoulder fabric to bunch up and lose its upright structure. Thus, beyond managing facial expressions, maintaining core tension was essential to support the dress's silhouette. The final photos achieved the intended cool-toned tranquility. A look like this—seemingly simple yet testing every detail—often leaves a far more lasting impression.
