[Castorice cosplay] Nighttime flower sea of Honkai: Star Rail

On the day of shooting this Castorice cosplay, we arrived at the designated outdoor site by 3:30 PM. The venue was a vast, lush patch of blue-purple wildflowers, visually fitting the original game's atmosphere perfectly. To avoid harsh daylight, we waited until after sunset when the sky entered that deep blue twilight before officially starting the shoot.

First, about the props and costume. The fabric for this outfit was chosen for its excellent drape, with a primary palette of white, purple, and blue, featuring multi-tiered ruffle collages at the chest and skirt hem. Positioning for straps and bows on the garment required careful pre-adjustment to prevent losing shape while walking. The matte texture of the long purple gloves paired with white stockings maintained great three-dimensional depth in cool-toned light. Regarding the wig, the most prominent features were those two long twin braids. To achieve a floating, wind-blown effect, we needed the breeze to blow at just the right moment during dynamic shots, or have an assistant use a hairdryer from the side.

Shooting in the flower field at night presented demanding lighting conditions. The photographer primarily used two stick lights: one for key outlining the character's silhouette and the other for frontal fill. To create a dreamy atmosphere like a peaceful resting place, we adjusted light color temperatures lower, resulting in an overall purple-blue color palette across the frame.

For photography equipment, 35mm and 50mm prime lenses were mainly used. The 35mm established spatial relationships between the flower sea, starry sky, and subject—as seen in the third wide-angle photo. The 50mm was used primarily for close-ups, capturing half-body shots and facial details. Outdoor focusing at night is challenging; with flower bushes swaying in the wind, the subject easily falls out of focus. Thus, shooting required immense patience, constantly adjusting aperture and shutter speeds to ensure the subject stayed crisp in the frame.

Post-production color grading was another crucial step for this shoot. After shooting raw photos, butterflies were composite-added in post-processing. To prevent the butterflies from appearing fake, we placed dim glowing micro-lights and light threads on set as tracking reference points for post-editing. Through composite editing, these purple glowing butterflies merged seamlessly with the shadows and highlights on the character and outfit.

To complement this outfit and setting, I maintained a calm, serene expression before the lens, aiming to convey Castorice's quiet, slightly detached yet gentle feel. Smiling or overly enthusiastic movements during shooting would disrupt the cool elegance this photo set intended to present.

The entire shoot lasted from twilight until 10 PM. Flower sea outdoor photoshoot sessions are like that—confronting mosquitoes, outdoor debris, and physical fatigue. The lower hem of the white tulle dress inevitably caught some grass juice and soil, but this precisely added a sense of documentary realism. To us, Anime cosplay isn't just putting on character clothes and taking pictures, but restoring an atmosphere belonging to that character within our capability.

After completing this photo set, we spent two weeks carefully retouching the images. We needed to preserve the original raw light and shadow quality while integrating starry sky and bokeh elements into the background to make it a complete Night portrait dreamy work. Though tedious, seeing the final photos made every effort feel completely worth it. I hope this serene set allows everyone to see my dedicated interpretation of this character.
