This modified qipao design for Shimoe Koharu has been one of my favorite recent styles: a black halter minidress trimmed in pink piping, with the monochrome wings at the back and the pink horns atop the crown preserving her iconic features while steering the look toward classical Chinese aesthetic charm. For the wig, I selected silver-pink short hair styled into twin buns accented by black bows and feather trims, ensuring the character's essence remained intact while adding a unique, distinct flair.
On the day of the shoot, we set up in the convention's photography zone; the surroundings were rather chaotic, so we staked out a corner with clean, translucent lighting. The white plush rug provided by the venue served as an ideal prop, grounding the black garment while bouncing soft fill light. Paired with the black folding fan, I kept my poses light and nimble—such as perching on one leg or sitting on the floor reading a book. The book cover happened to feature pink accents, tying in seamlessly with the dress's pink piped edges.
For cosmetics, red eyeshadow and matching contacts were the highlights; because booth lighting was intense, I deepened the red along the lower lash line to make the eyes pop on camera. Taming the wig was another challenge: the blunt bangs had to be trimmed to hover right over the brows without poking into my eyes, and the ends needed finely textured thinning to avoid a stiff, heavy block.
Black patent-leather heels were genuinely brutal on the feet, but they undeniably elongated leg contours before the lens, so I powered through the entire shoot. Throughout the session, the photographer continually guided my angles—especially seated poses, where striking flattering lines within the narrow skirt slit while guarding against wardrobe slips required thoughtful precision. The white plush mat on the floor proved invaluable; settling into it and pairing hand gestures with the folding fan sparked a lovely sense of dynamic energy within a static frame.
Convention hall lighting is notoriously messy, with overhead strobes and background lights clashing repeatedly, so we tested several spots to ensure clean facial illumination. This set of convention photos owes much to post-processing for subduing background clutter and isolating the subject. When tackling a modified Qipao cosplay, the secret lies in finding your core balance—whether holding a fan or flipping through a book, movements must never look rigid, but rather flow like natural daily moments.
The chosen props were wonderfully concise: a black folding fan and a small booklet—props don't need to be excessive, just effective. From early wig styling and outfit coordination to on-site liaising with the photographer over lighting angles, every phase shaped the final deliverable. Moving around the venue in this outfit demanded steady, controlled strides due to the short hem and high slit. Resting during breaks on the white mat with the plush shawl draped over my shoulders while casually leafing through an artbook actually yielded the most natural candid captures. I am deeply pleased with the execution of this styling: the black fabric caught flash highlights with premium texture, while the pink trim broke up any somber tones to perfection.
