[Coco cosplay] Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch: A Pearl in the Dreamy Shell of the South Pacific

Planning and executing the makeup, styling, and shoot for this Coco cosplay set from Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch actually took quite a while in preparation. The reflective effect of this yellow glossy sailor skirt under the lights is the core to restoring that dazzling sensation of the character swimming in the South Pacific waters. To fit the Mermaid Princess setting from Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch, I paid special attention to the hair and accessory pairings.

Speaking of the wig, this waist-length straight hair was the focus of the styling. Both length and volume had to be sufficient to present a flowing texture during movement. Especially in the shell and translucent jellyfish scene, capturing the moment the long hair whipped through the air required repeated takes to achieve a satisfying result. The character's signature blue microphone prop was also custom-made, adding a stage presence when held in hand. For set design, we built a large white shell prop directly on site, paired with blue artificial flowers, pearls, and hanging luminous jellyfish, perfectly replicating the mysterious and dreamy underwater world from the anime.

There were quite a few small challenges during the shoot. First was this glossy skirt; its material is quite unique, making it prone to overexposure or harsh hot spots under complex studio lighting. To suppress highlights while preserving the fabric's natural texture, the gaffer used ample diffusion modifiers, scattering the light through diffuse reflection so the skirt's sheen appeared as soft as a pearl. Additionally, arranging the heavy long skirt hem to create depth—whether on the ground or simulating water—required repeated adjustments.

When standing inside the shell, I tried to focus on my lower body posture, because in this Mermaid Princess look, the drape of the skirt and the exposed white platform boots serve as key visual anchors. During dynamic action captures, although jumping repeatedly was physically demanding, seeing the shutter catch the flying skirt hem and fluttering hair strands made all the effort feel completely worthwhile. For transformation-type Magical Girl characters, a confident and agile demeanor in posing and facial expression is crucial; you cannot simply stand there in an outfit, but must convey the character's lively, vibrant spirit.

This time, I tried multiple angles to interpret the feeling of the South Pacific mermaid—from the elegance of sitting quietly inside the shell to the dynamic energy of extending my arms to show the ocean's power. I really love the warm-and-cold contrast between yellow and ice blue in the final shots. Against the dark blue, cool-toned underwater background, this vibrant pop of yellow looks exceptionally alive, highlighting her identity as a Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch princess.

Although this outfit posed significant difficulty in lighting setup and movement requirements, seeing the final sheen and detail presentation made all adjustments and reshoots feel well worth it. This was a dedicated interpretation of a Magical Girl setting, carefully considering everything from wig length to skirt fabric and scene details. I hope these photos allow everyone to feel the ocean breeze of the South Pacific and the happy energy of the character.
