During the Guangzhou Anime Convention, I shot this set of Moria Ruruka photos. The black and gold color scheme of the uniform combined with the purple gemstone embellishments creates a very sharp visual contrast, which is exactly what attracts me to this character. The character setting carries a detective trait and the composure of a Magical Girl, so I put extra effort into preparing the props this time. Especially with this long magic wand, the card and bow elements at the top, as well as the translucent texture of the gemstone, were repeatedly verified for accuracy.
The convention venue was crowded with people and the lighting was relatively complex. Shooting in such a large environment tests the ability to capture light and shadow. The photographer utilized some of the hard lights on-site to create an excellent boundary between light and dark, which perfectly fitted the atmosphere of offering guidance within the labyrinth for this Cosplay photography piece. In these few photos, we tried different movement variations. The first one, a close-up crouching pose, is very close to the character's state during quiet contemplation, and the hand gesture perfectly brings out that cool and sharp vibe. The second one, sitting on a suitcase, is more relaxed, carrying a touch of slight ease amidst the busy intervals of the convention. The subsequent standing and half-body portraits display the posture of a Magical Girl preparing to unleash her powers.
For the makeup, the eyes and lip color were emphasized, trying to find a balance between cold aloofness and approachability. The atmosphere on-site at the Guangzhou Anime Convention is always very vibrant, and collaborating with the photographer to adjust camera positions and lighting went smoothly. This process of wholeheartedly committing to expressing a character is exactly where the joy of taking photos at every convention lies, and the final results this time truly achieved the expected outcome.
