This time, I'm bringing you the summer beach version of Takanashi Hoshino from Blue Archive. Originally, this character gives players that reliable yet somewhat lazy and casual 'uncle' vibe in the story. Choosing to shoot at the beach this time was also meant to match this relaxing vacation atmosphere.
Let's talk about the overall outfit and styling concept first. To highlight the refreshing summer feel, the inner layer is a white cropped camisole and shorts combo, exposing the waistline. Over that is a loose mint green sun-protection outerwear. This fresh mint green paired with the pink short hair creates a very soft color contrast under the sunlight. The iconic pink concentric circle halo headpiece on top is the key point of this styling restoration; not only does it need to be secure, but it also needs to avoid being blown messy outdoors. The sunglasses propped on top of the head were also added to enhance a bit of fashion and casual detail.
For props, we used this giant blue-and-white striped inflatable whale toy. Actually, quite a bit of thought went into preparing this prop beforehand, as we needed to find an element that could both echo fun memes related to the character and act as a large color-block balancer in the composition. The round shape of this inflatable whale, combined with my posture sitting on the beach mat, looked visually very full and added plenty of interactive space.
The weather on the day of the shoot was very sunny. The light in the afternoon was relatively hard, but paired with the reflection of the sea surface and the distant mountain background, the lighting atmosphere was exceptionally rich. To avoid harsh shadows on the face, we used a reflector on site for some fill light. Especially since I was wearing a white top and white shorts, balancing the translucency of the skin and the highlighted clothing in a high-reflection scenario like the beach was quite an important task during the preliminary shooting.
To capture the uncle's relatively relaxed and 'motionless' demeanor, the side-sitting posture in the first photo and the closing photo of leaning against the inflatable toy with eyes closed and smiling were both attempts to restore the character's genuine reactions in a cozy and comfortable environment. There were also a few more energetic waving actions in the middle to express the character's occasionally quirky and lively side. Although the pink wig is very bright in color, in an open environment like the beach, it easily drifts away in the wind, so a lot of hairspray and clips were used for styling. Reviewing the details after shooting, the direction of the hair strands still looked quite natural and smooth.
Shooting outdoors really tests one's physical stamina, especially walking on the beach and frequently adjusting sitting and lying postures, which inevitably gets sand on the feet. However, seeing how well the languid feel and summer atmosphere blend together in the final photos makes everything feel worth it. In terms of composition, we deliberately kept a large area of blue sky and waves as a background; the blue, white, and green color scheme made the whole set of photos look very cool. Because the character belongs to a type with built-in contrasts, I tried my best to maintain an effortless, slightly lazy demeanor in my expressions.
This outdoor shooting experience was still very pleasant. Even though the sea breeze was strong, maintaining a state in front of the lens is always a cosplayer's professional quality. I hope this set of photos can convey that relaxed, everyday feel of Blue Archive, carrying a trace of uncle charm. If there is an opportunity in the future, maybe I can try shooting some indoor, more casual daily versions to showcase different facets of the character, which should also be very interesting.
