For this nighttime shoot at the World Line Anime convention, I brought out the Marin Kitagawa (Liz the Succubus) cosplay look. I had actually prepared this outfit for quite a while, mainly aiming to present a distinct texture within the convention's interplay of light and shadow. The red wig is intensely saturated, and paired with black demon horns, it carries powerful visual impact. To echo the overall dark aesthetic, I deliberately chose green contact lenses; this sharp red-green contrast comes across crisply before the camera lens.
Let's first talk wardrobe details. The upper body features a cropped white shirt layered with a black cropped bustier. This spliced structure sections visual proportions wonderfully, while the ruffles of the cropped shirt soften the ruggedness of the leather shorts. The bottom consists of black leather shorts; honestly, wearing leather shorts at an Anime convention tests both stamina and comfort, but for the overall aesthetic, the way leather reflects camera flash simply cannot be replicated by ordinary fabric. The detached sleeves splice black translucent mesh with white satin and lace-up ribbon ties, creating a breezy, flowing flutter in motion. The tiny bat wings on the back are mounted on a supportive strap; pulling the wings inward slightly in front of the camera to strike an ambush or mischievous pose instantly builds a rich sense of story.
In terms of pose and expression design, the Succubus concept inherently invites lively interactivity. Rather than constantly staring down the lens, I aimed for candid captures—such as sticking out my tongue, making claw gestures, or leaning forward toward the camera. Pointing both hands to my cheeks while sticking out my tongue conveyed a wickedly charming cheekiness. With skin exposure centered around the midriff and legs, I mindfully engaged my core during poses to accentuate the waistline. Kneeling poses put heavy pressure on the thighs, but they sculpt gorgeous leg lines; to nail the shot, kneeling repeatedly was well worth it.
Nighttime lighting at an Anime convention truly challenges fill-light technique. Without careful control, red hair and red ambient lights can easily bleed into a muddy blur. We scouted a relatively dim backdrop on site, using a frontal key light and a side rim light to define stray hairs and body contours. To make the red-and-black color palette pop, high contrast was maintained in post-processing. Every convention feels like a dual drill of physical stamina and mental focus—from doing makeup and entering the venue to scouting spots and coordinating with the photographer, every step demands full concentration. Especially outside such a stuffy exhibition hall, braving several hours of shooting in a full wig and prop setup was a genuine test of endurance.
Regarding the maintenance of costume and makeup, the demon horn props tend to tilt during a convention, so they were anchored firmly with numerous bobby pins. The wig also required styling wax on the bangs and sides in advance to prevent stray hairs from fluttering wildly in the night wind. In reflective venues like convention halls, setting the base makeup solidly is paramount; otherwise, sebum-induced shine can ruin the entire shot. Although this styling incorporates numerous elements, they harmonize smoothly—the white collar and cuffs provide great brightening against dark backgrounds. Zipper and belt accents on the leather shorts also inject a hardcore edge, making this Little Devil persona even more dimensional.
Wrapping up this night shoot left me feeling that all the fatigue was completely worthwhile. The visual presentation of this styling and the on-site lighting interplay achieved exactly what I had envisioned. Should a suitable night location come up in the future, I would definitely love to experiment with similar creative styles again. That's all for now.
