[Saigyouji Yuyuko Cosplay] Touhou Project: The Elegant Bloom Under Night Cherry Blossoms

This set of photos was completed during the night hours at Dapingshan Cherry Blossom Valley. Before the shoot, I communicated with the photographer for a long time, hoping to merge the character's dreamlike qualities with the cherry blossom atmosphere of a spring night, creating a visual experience that hovers between reality and dreams. This is also one of my more satisfying night cherry blossom outdoor photoshoot attempts recently. The shoot was mainly divided into two time periods: daytime and night. In the daytime, under soft light, we took quiet and gentle close-ups like Image 1 and Image 2. When night fell, the style shifted dramatically into a hallucinatory environment, giving this cosplay photoshoot a large span in light, shadow, and emotional expression.

Let's talk about the look first. The costume this time is highly inclusive, taking a route that blends a traditional Japanese style with a Western dress. The main body features a large area of light blue, with intricate white lace ruffles applied to the edges of the collar, cuffs, and skirt hem. To avoid looking too heavy, the fabric chosen is relatively light and breathable chiffon and lace to add a sense of airiness to the overall look. The waist processing is the visual center of the entire style. I specially paired it with a deep blue wide obi sash featuring traditional gold textures. The side of the sash also features red and white cord ties and a light blue plush ball. This contrast of light and dark colors and the collision of materials allow the originally Western-style dress to blend seamlessly with an oriental charm.

To maintain the lightness of the styling, we also put a lot of effort into the skirt hem. The outer layer of white sheer tulle is very soft, and the inner layer has a lining to prevent exposure. The skirt hem features a multi-layered overlapping design, with the outermost layer being a transparent white tulle where subtle patterns can be faintly seen, creating a shimmering visual effect when walking or blown by the wind. Another highlight of the lower body is the matching white lace thigh-high stockings, using a delicately woven lace pattern that doesn't steal the spotlight from the dress but exudes sophistication in the details. The geta clogs on my feet are key to enhancing the height proportions; the thick-heel design is very stable, and the colorful floral cloth bow on the wooden base acts as a clever accent that echoes the overall color tone of the costume perfectly.

For hair and makeup, the pink short wig was given a slightly fluffy treatment with airy bangs, and the ends were curved slightly inward to look naturally lazy instead of rigid. For the makeup, I deliberately lowered the color saturation, using a light pink eyeshadow base, then focused on outlining the eyeliner and eyelashes to deepen the gaze. The lips were colored in a vibrant cherry pink, blending together to keep the overall makeup look clean, maintaining facial dimensionality even when facing strong studio strobes. Whether the wig and makeup could withstand the flash units during the night shoot was also crucial, and this advanced preparation relieved a lot of post-processing pressure.

This shoot allowed me to truly experience the beauty of night cherry blossoms firsthand. Dapingshan Cherry Blossom Valley is soft and romantic during the day, but at night, when the lights turn on, the cherry blossoms present a fluffy look with distinct highlights against the dark night. Images 3 to 6 were all shot after nightfall. The photographer set up relatively strong hard light from the side of the camera, which reflected beautifully off the white tulle, geta clogs, and clear umbrella, making the entire figure look incredibly translucent against the dark background. No excessive color rendering was done in post-processing; we mainly retained the pinkish-white of the cherry blossoms and the light blue of the clothing itself. Through adjustments in color temperature and shadows, the frame aligns with that cool yet dreamlike atmosphere.

During the shooting process, the clear umbrella and folding fan in my hands became props to extend my movements. In the woods at night, the clear umbrella reflected the faint glow of the surrounding cherry blossoms. When holding it for the shoot, the entire umbrella acted like a luminous body, adding a touch of mystery to the frame. In addition, to display the leg lines and shoe details, I tried the sitting posture in Image 6 several times, adjusting the angle of my legs and the arrangement of the tulle skirt. The texture of the thick-heeled geta clogs paired with the white stockings visually made my legs look longer, and walking with platform shoes on uneven ground at night required constant attention to my footing. When holding the folding fan, I also needed to adjust the strength of my wrist according to the wind direction so that the cuffs and hem of the costume would flow naturally with the wind.

Overall, although this night shoot was a bit exhausting, the final results truly surprised me. Night cherry blossoms, camera flashes, a Japanese-style Western dress, lace, and geta clogs—these elements combined not only reified the character's traits but also presented a visual imagination of a spring night. The temperature in the cherry blossom forest at night was actually quite low, and to guarantee the fluffiness of the skirt, I couldn't wear too many thick thermal layers, but everyone was highly invested. The final photos prove that all the persistence was worth it in this anime cosplay.
