This cosplay shoot for Yao Guang from Honkai: Star Rail took substantial dedication from hair and makeup to set design. Wanting to leave a distinctive visual record around the special occasion of 'when the moon and loved ones unite,' I decided to stage this fantasy-tinged Traditional style studio photography session indoors. For the wig, I selected a softly curled silver-white short style trimmed with natural layering; the hair strands caught the backlighting to reveal crisp, translucent highlights. Paired with sparkling blue contact lenses, the catchlights in my eyes stood out brilliantly, complemented by peachy-orange lips to solidly ground my facial three-dimensionality.

The garment layering was the core styling hurdle. The white halter top features sharp, tailored lines, with intricate silver filigree metallic ornaments, blue gem accents, and crimson tassels across the chest, creating a bold interplay between structured rigidity and soft elegance under the lights. The heavy dark plush shawl draped over it—woven with navy and purplish-black tones accented by pink-violet gradient highlights—looked exceptionally regal cascading across the shoulders. Down below, the slit cyan-blue skirt was not only strikingly photogenic in motion, but naturally framed the leg lines when seated. The luminous feather-shaped wrist corsage and rhinestone chest detailing prepared by the prop team held up impeccably under close-up scrutiny.

We deliberately chose a vintage studio set adorned with antique wooden furnishings. A peacock motif sculpture on the left and a vintage grandfather clock in the right background enriched the spatial depth of the composition. The lighting setup primarily relied on warm side-backlighting, which cleanly rimmed facial contours and the edges of the silver hair while bringing out the intricate textures of the plush shawl and feather props. Throughout the takes, I constantly regulated my breathing and shoulder tension—keeping my spine straight when leaning forward with wrists relaxed to channel her composed, alluring ease. Holding the peacock feather prop extended or half-veiling the face added kinetic grace and narrative depth.

Controlling illumination in Traditional style studio photography is notoriously demanding because shadow textures get swallowed so easily, so softboxes were used to ensure smooth transitions across metallic reflections and facial shadows. Moving through poses while carrying that heavy shawl was undeniably tiring, yet seeing the finished frames where fantastical chiaroscuro seamlessly merged with this ornate ensemble was deeply fulfilling. Every character portrayal is a brand-new adventure, and I hope this set conveys that singular blend of icy detachment and lavish grandeur.
