[Youmu cosplay] Touhou's Ghostly Gardener: The Moment of Wielding Dual Blades

This shoot at Anime Star City was mainly dedicated to documenting this outfit blending Western and traditional Japanese elements, along with the dual-blade props. We selected this cold, rugged stone wall as our backdrop primarily because its coarse texture provided maximum contrast to the intricate details of the costume and the character's temperament. The shoot was scheduled for a specific time window to catch the sharply slanted top light filtering directly in, creating a high-contrast atmosphere between light and shadow.

Speaking of the costume, its asymmetrical design posed the greatest challenge. The left sleeve features a crisp, structured fabric with green-and-white geometric triangle patterns, while the right side is draped in extensive layers of translucent green gauze and lace. This asymmetry was initially a headache since the sheer fabric easily tangled with the main garment during poses. We later tried speeding up my turns, using the resulting air current to catch the gauze, which unexpectedly created lively, dynamic layers. The bamboo leaf patterns along the skirt's bottom hem also needed to be visible in frame, requiring me to monitor the skirt's drape constantly so it flared out naturally.

For hair and makeup, I styled the silver-white bob wig with blunt bangs meticulously; flat bangs look dull, so hairspray and a blow dryer were used to build airy volume. Although the black side ribbon looks simple, it needed precise pinning to stay balanced from every angle. The makeup incorporated light blue contact lenses paired with soft pink blush focused beneath the eyes and across the apples of the cheeks to soften facial intensity and impart an ethereal quality. The eyeliner was slightly extended to sharpen the character's gaze.

Balancing the dual blades was quite tricky, especially during overhead raises and crossed-sword stances. Given the weight of the props, holding dynamic action poses proved physically taxing. Raising swords can easily tense the arm and shoulder muscles, which looks unnatural on camera. To counter this, I distributed my core strength, relaxed my facial expressions, and let my eyes convey focused intensity. I repeatedly fine-tuned my grip and checked the blade's tilt angle in full-body frames to achieve the most dramatic diagonal line cutting across the composition.

The full-body shots are my favorites from this set. The purple geta paired with white lace-trimmed ankle socks formed a striking contrast against the cold stone wall and sharp blades, while beautifully flattering leg proportions. To nail the full-body captures, I experimented with various stances and toe angles to ensure the skirt's bamboo motifs and leg lines were displayed to their best advantage. Working with the ambient light, the photographer used low angles and tight crops to heighten visual impact. In particular, the perspective on the blade paired with cool ambient lighting evoked a crisp, lethal edge.

The synergy with the photographer was seamless; before each sequence, we discussed how to balance the weapon's raw power with the delicate grace of the outfit. Lighting angles were shifted repeatedly to capture that gap between her cool composure and petite frame. Wrapping up the shoot brought a profound sense of achievement. Expressing creative ideas through makeup, styling, and poses before the lens is always an extraordinary experience.
