On May 25th, I shot this birthday celebratory set for Elaina from Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina at Changsha Yanghu Wetland Park under wonderfully crisp, translucent natural light. A great deal of prep work went into this outdoor shoot. While the classic blue-and-pink witch attire is gorgeous, its multiple layers combined with the oversized wide-brimmed hat posed a real challenge for carrying gear and navigating on-site. The wide brim easily casts harsh shadows across the face in bright sunshine, so I constantly had to micro-adjust the angle of my head while photographer Qianxia actively bounced fill light with a reflector to ensure the catchlights in my eyes and the pink-purple eye makeup showed up crystal clear.
For the wig, the silver-white straight hair reached all the way to the ground. To keep it from tangling or looking messy amidst the flower bushes, I treated it with generous amounts of smoothing spray and anti-static conditioner. The blunt bangs were styled and set in advance to prevent gusts of wind from ruining the character silhouette. My makeup focused on an ethereal, slightly dreamy gaze, complemented by pale-toned colored contacts, striving to embody Elaina's signature blend of tsundere poise and gentle sweetness.
In terms of posing, to stay level with the height of the blossoms, I tested numerous crouching postures. When crouching down, careful attention had to be paid to the draping layers of the dark navy robe and wide pink collar so they wouldn't bunch up awkwardly. Wearing this white ruffle-trimmed outfit paired with tall boots, I deliberately adjusted my leg placement to subtly reveal a sliver of thigh, keeping the overall silhouette light and agile—preserving both the witch's playful spark and a maiden's delicate charm. Gently twirling a small pink flower in hand or lightly adjusting the brim of the hat with one hand added narrative depth to every frame.
The vast expanse of red flowers in the backdrop created a striking contrast against the dark navy robe, and the photographer used a wide aperture to softly blur the foreground foliage, making the character look as if she had stepped straight out of a fairy tale. The golden hexagram brooch on my chest stood out brilliantly against the red petals; I double-checked its positioning during the shoot to maximize its reflective sheen. As a birthday tribute, I'm personally thrilled with this set and deeply grateful for the seamless teamwork with my photographer. Which framing did you like best? Looking forward to reading your thoughts in the comments!
Outdoor shoots are truly an endurance test, especially moving through dirt and dense flower bushes while keeping the dress hem immaculate and boots spotless. Every step required extreme care to avoid stepping on plants or snagging the fabric on twigs. Beyond the garments, accessory details were vital: the gold hexagram brooch and the pink ribbon on the hat are quintessential hallmarks of Elaina's look, and I paid close attention to their visibility during three-quarter angles and close-ups. Changsha Yanghu Wetland Park is beautifully landscaped, offering rich tonal depth with its interwoven reds and greens. To capture that cool, aloof glint in her eyes, I refined my angles again and again before the lens, ultimately achieving a highly faithful rendition. Happy birthday to the loveliest Miss Elaina, and I hope everyone enjoys this photo set!
