[Elaina Cosplay] Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina – A Silver-Haired Witch Strolling by the Riverbank

Putting on this iconic witch outfit featuring color-blocking of blue, white, and pink, paired with the oversized witch hat and silver-white wig, immediately allows me to step into character with a strong presence. In fact, this costume has many design details, such as the purplish-red lining of the coat, the bright yellow bow tie at the collar, and the pink paneling on the cuffs. With these elements combined, the overall look carries both the structured feel of a magic academy uniform and a touch of lively girliness. Previously in convention photos, the response to this outfit was quite good, especially the platform boots with black and pink color-blocking, which many passersby found very well-designed.

For this shoot, we chose a riverside walkway in the suburbs, with open water and the city skyline in the background. This kind of outdoor cosplay setting actually has strict requirements for lighting and weather. Although the sunlight on the day of the shoot was indeed quite strong—coincidentally fitting the lighthearted quote from the original work that "even the sun feels dazzled"—photographing a white wig under harsh light poses quite a challenge for post-production color grading. Furthermore, the wig easily gets messy in the wind, so I specially secured the hairstyle using thin braids on both sides with yellow hair ties. This way, even with a light breeze in front of the camera, the look remains refined and neat.

Throughout the shoot, I tried several different styles. For instance, in the close-up shot of Photo 5, with my hand gently resting on my chest and the background blurred using a wide aperture to melt away green leaves, this composition emphasizes the character's eyes and expressions. To capture her tsundere vibe of being "a bit self-obsessed without being overly exaggerated," I didn't maintain a bright smile the whole time. Instead, I incorporated some calm or slightly averted deep gazes, making the photos feel more story-driven rather than just simple poses.

If I had to pick the best image for a cover, I highly recommend the long shot in Photo 6. In this picture, I lean sideways against a stone railing with my legs naturally crossed and one hand holding the brim of my hat. This full-body photo maximizes all the highlights of the character's outfit—the tall magic hat, the loose dark blue coat, the eye-catching pink cuffs and lining, the white shirt, and the bright yellow tie. Moreover, this posture subtly elongates the leg lines, which, paired with the heavy black boots with pink soles, offers moderate color saturation and conveys a calm, effortless confidence. The character is not positioned at the edge of the frame, leaving just the right amount of negative space in the composition.

Actually, whenever cosplaying a character with large props or a long coat, physical inconvenience is one thing, but another challenge lies in capturing the core of the character's personality. Looking through the original setting, as the Silver-haired witch, although she often utters surprising lines calling herself a "beautiful girl," she actually possesses a delicate and gentle heart. Therefore, when attempting confident poses like standing with arms crossed (Photo 2) or stretching out the coat's hem (Photo 4), I intentionally kept my shoulders and back relaxed to avoid looking stiff or overly aggressive, striving to present a lively yet elegant character image in front of the lens.

Regarding the photography equipment, the photographer utilized natural light with high brightness and low contrast. This approach beautifully restored the colors of the murky river water and whitish sky in the background. For example, in Photo 3, foreground green plants were used to partially block the view, creating a peek-a-boo depth of field. Framing the character through green foliage brings a lot of vitality to the image. For people who frequently shoot outdoor cosplay, this technique of using environmental elements to add depth to the composition is extremely practical.

Although outdoor shooting felt a bit stuffy due to maintaining the costume and styling, seeing clean, aesthetic, and character-accurate images appear in the camera made all the preparation worth it. From the moment I put on the wig, I was no longer my everyday self, but the little witch wearing her magic hat, constantly moving forward along her journey. Completing this set of work smoothly by the riverbank brings a great sense of accomplishment.
