[Elaina cosplay] Journey Moments of the Ashen Witch

When shooting this Elaina set, I actually went with a very relaxed mindset. The character of the Ashen Witch Elaina—with her slight narcissism and tsundere nature in the original work, yet simultaneously filled with gentleness and a desire for exploration—is truly fascinating. The location chosen this time was a standard comic convention venue. The floor was a cold, hard industrial-style concrete, and overhead were those neatly arranged circular lights. The lighting was relatively harsh, but this harsh light was actually perfect for bringing out that cold, lonely atmospheric vibe of the Ashen Witch.
In terms of clothing, I'm quite satisfied with the accuracy of this witch outfit. The outer purple robe isn't actually a plain solid purple; its cuffs and edges have a layered wavy border and light purple paneling. Plus, the upturned side of the huge wide-brimmed hat is a very vibrant magenta, creating a great color contrast that makes it memorable at first glance. The white inner shirt combined with the bright yellow bowknot brightens the visual focus above the chest, and paired with the deep blue pleated skirt, the overall proportions look quite elongated.
The props were actually the main event: that broom tied with purple fabric and pink ribbons, and the slender black magic wand. Carrying this set of props and weaving through the crowd during a Convention photo session is honestly very exhausting. The broom is wooden; although its weathered, rough texture looks quite authentic, it's actually very heavy, making my arms ache after holding it up for a long time. To capture that dynamic sense of casting spells or flying, I struck several single-leg balancing poses, relying entirely on one leg to stabilize my center of gravity while coordinating with the fluttering cloak—it was quite a physical workout.
The pose choices this time were also meant to align with the character's traits as much as possible, such as placing the magic wand near the chin while spacing out or smiling with subtle confidence, which better expresses Elaina's casual ease and composure on her journey. During the shoot, the photographer Himeno Towa was incredibly helpful; she knew Elaina's movement style and constantly had me adjust my gaze and the draped curve of the cloak. The fluttering effects of the hem or cloak seen in some photos were actually achieved by shaking the clothes right before the shutter clicked or blowing them with a fan on-site. That split-second freeze perfectly captured the agility of the witch's journey.
The foot traffic in the convention hall was indeed heavy. There were often black reflectors or umbrellas in the background, or even passing onlookers snapping stealthy shots, but these were all blurred out by the wide aperture. For a Convention photo, this semi-cluttered background actually adds a sense of being at a massive magical gathering, which doesn't feel out of place at all. Handling the props well can also add a lot of fun to the frame, especially the tilting angle of the broom, which echoes the lines of the leg posture.
Although the Ashen Witch claims to be eighteen, the character inherently possesses a calm indifference that comes from experiencing many things. When making expressions, I deliberately kept them restrained and not too exaggerated, with the corners of my mouth slightly raised, making my gaze look as if I were contemplating the distant horizon. The overall feel of this appearance matched my initial expectations quite well; the texture of the clothes, the detailed handling of the braided wig, and the pairing of the boots all felt highly cohesive.
Compared to going to a complex outdoor location, this experience of taking a Convention photo inside an exhibition hall has its own unique charm. It doesn't require an intricate environment; as long as the lighting is right and the angle is good, the character's design itself can be highlighted. By the end of the shoot, I was actually a bit tired, but seeing the final images in the playback—especially after successfully nailing those dynamic snapshots—made me genuinely happy. Perhaps the journey of the Ashen Witch is filled out piece by piece through these fine, scattered moments.
