Heading to the beach to cosplay Chizuru (Chizuru Mizuhara) this time truly required thorough preparation. This iconic floral slip dress paired with a light-blue knit cardigan is a personal favorite combination of mine. To recreate the visual texture from the anime, I spent considerable time comparing the tiered ruffles of the dress and the red lace-up ribbons across the bodice. Styled with a pink ribbon tote bag, over-the-knee Black stockings, and chunky platform Mary Jane shoes, the overarching color contrast looked remarkably photogenic against the seaside backdrop.
As everyone noticed, the post description mentioned the massive crowds—and indeed, arriving right on the weekend meant the beach was swarming with tourists. Shooting under such conditions genuinely tested the chemistry between the photographer and me. To bypass the crowds, we had to hunt for specific angles or open up the aperture to dissolve the background into soft bokeh. In photo five, that leg-lifting motion was actually me shifting my balance, but the photographer caught it candidly, resulting in an unexpectedly delightful anime-style playful flair.
The coastal sea breeze was another major hurdle. While long straight hair looks ethereal in theory, a sudden gust easily plastered strands across my face or blocked my eyes. To ensure the wig wouldn't collapse, I applied generous amounts of styling products at the roots. The skirt hem was another challenge: whenever the sea breeze picked up, it easily blew too high or plastered completely flat against my legs. Managing this required subtle physical adjustments—such as pressing it down lightly with a hand, or using arm poses like in photos three and four to balance the dynamic flow of the frame.
Furthermore, wearing Black stockings to the beach demands extreme caution. The beach is full of fine sand and tiny pebbles that can snag and run the stockings in an instant. During breaks between takes, I practically walked on tiptoe or had an assistant keep watch. These Mary Jane shoes also feature a modest heel, sinking easily into the sand, which meant engaging leg muscles intensely just to maintain an upright, poised stance.
Speaking of the character: Chizuru usually presents a poised, gentle demeanor, yet in this specific setting, she naturally reveals the youthful zest characteristic of a young girl. In my facial expressions, I strove to sustain that polite smile with a subtle sense of distance, while letting relaxed, slightly mischievous glimpses peek through during candid snaps. For catchlights, I chose clear, luminous contact lenses to enhance that anime aesthetic.
Shooting on location at the beach made natural light the best filter. The brilliant blue sky and white clouds delivered effortlessly that day, yielding crisp, translucent frames without complex color grading. Nonetheless, to emphasize character texture, I slightly pulled down the highlights in post-production, deepening the blues of the sky and ocean so the white floral dress stood out even more vividly.
The overall shoot was genuinely fun. Walking on sand in footwear without socks underneath is rather scratchy, but seeing the final photos made every effort worthwhile. I hope this work lets everyone feel that unique charm of Chizuru.
