For this shoot, I chose Formidable's cheongsam look. Putting on this black-and-white modified cheongsam and standing before the set, I instantly felt immersed in the character. I was originally curious how this look would blend the original 2D aesthetic with traditional Chinese elements. Once worn, the black-and-white contrast provided striking layers, offering both the delicacy of a maid outfit and the poise of a cheongsam. The most satisfying part of this styling was the headpiece: the large bow with black-and-white lace trim is very eye-catching. Paired with the extra-long silver-gray twin-tail wig—voluminous and carrying a fine silky luster—and complemented by red eye makeup and lenses, the look achieved high recognizability. Before shooting, I specifically adjusted the wig's placement to ensure it didn't block my line of sight while letting the ends fall naturally to add a sense of visual extension.
The costume boasts rich design details. The oversized white plush shawl is a standout feature; soft to the touch, it adds a wintery vibe while looking exceptionally grand on camera. The inner piece is a cutout black-and-white spliced top trimmed with black ruffled lace, with a small red-and-black accent on the chest breaking up the monochrome palette. The modified hem is distinctive: semi-sheer white tulle layered over black shorts, combined with striking black thigh rings and semi-sheer Black stockings, elongates the leg lines while flawlessly matching the character's elegant yet playful persona. On my feet were glossy black high heels; the patent leather material provided great reflections, and with the strappy design, it made the ankles look visually slimmer, showcasing the shoes' premium texture across both standing and seated poses.
The studio environment was rich with Eastern charm, featuring wooden lattice folding screens, antique curio shelves, and blooming pink cherry blossom props in the background. Two off-white washi paper floor lamps provided a soft, warm light source, making the light on my face clear and luminous. What surprised me most was the floor's mirror reflection. Whether standing or seated on the mahogany chair, reflections on the floor crisply outlined the extended leg silhouette, enhancing spatial depth and sophistication. In terms of posing and expression, this look required balancing elegance with effortless ease. I prepared a transparent round fan as an auxiliary prop; holding it fostered natural camera interaction and relaxed hand gestures. We tried various angles during the shoot—such as crossing legs on the chair to highlight the details of the Black stockings and thigh rings, while full-body standing shots better showcased the drape of the white plush shawl and overall body proportions.
This modified Cheongsam cosplay style requires maintaining dignity while carrying a hint of proud attitude towards the Commander, so I tailored my gaze and slight smile to match the character's poised, confident demeanor. Although standing and posing in high heels for a long time made my feet ache, seeing the character's aura faithfully recreated in the final photos made every second worthwhile. The entire outfit was easy to move in, the set's layering was distinct, and working with the photographer went smoothly. This clash of black, white, and pink, coupled with traditional Chinese props like the fan and screen, breathed a fresh visual experience into the original Azur Lane setting. I hope this look showcases another facet of Formidable cosplay's elegance and echoes that warm greeting welcoming the Commander back to port, letting fellow fans feel the dedication behind our set and costume design.
