Unlocking the folder I had hidden deep within my phone album, this photo was taken during a costume fitting and was never made public. I always felt it wasn't perfect, thinking my gaze could be a bit colder and the wig layers could use a few more trims. But today is different—it's a special day. Bringing out this original photo as a Birthday anniversary memory makes me realize that those strict self-scrutinies in the past were actually a form of deep affection for this cosplay.
The very first thing I did upon receiving this wig was hand-trimming the bangs and side layers. The silver-to-black gradient has a very special texture under the light—it's not a rigid pure white, but rather carries a soft transition that, combined with the underlying black hair accents, gives the entire hairstyle strong structure without collapsing flat. This haircut modifies face shapes remarkably well; the asymmetrical bang design in particular accentuates facial 3D depth while hiding part of the eyes in shadow, creating an aloof and mysterious vibe.
For makeup, I deliberately softened the eyeshadow colors, shifting focus toward eye contouring and gaze expression. Elongating the eyeliner without looking harsh, paired with natural warm-toned lipstick, neutralized the cold stiffness of the hair color and uniform, allowing the overall aura to retain The Knave cosplay's inviolable distance while radiating unquestionable composure. I feel this is the charm of cosplay—not just wearing an outfit, but vividly embodying that 2D image into 3D reality through makeup, hairstyle, and demeanor.
The costume details were also a point of great satisfaction for me this time. The black jacket fabric carries a subtle matte sheen, tailored closely with crisp shoulder lines that hold up the character's presence. The white bow tie is truly the crowning touch; its size and shape required repeated adjustments to achieve this structured yet elegant look. Golden buttons on the jacket stand out brightly against the black background, adhering closely to the original work's exquisite, sleek design style. Wearing this outfit, my posture naturally straightened up effortlessly.
In truth, doing cosplay is something that tests patience immensely. From finding the right fabric at the start, waiting for deliveries, fitting, wig trimming, to final makeup, every single step might need to be torn down and redone. But when we stand before the mirror and see ourselves inching closer to the image in our mind, that sense of accomplishment is irreplaceable.
Bringing out this saved photo today is my small ritual for myself and the character. After today comes a fresh start, and I will continue exploring different styles on this cosplay journey, improving my makeup and styling skills. I hope next time I cosplay other characters, I can bring even more surprises to friends following me. While posing, I kept trying to find the best angle—maintaining the character's proud aloofness without looking stiff. I ultimately picked this one; although my arm looks slightly enlarged due to proximity to the camera lens, the overall visual focus is centered nicely on the upper body contrast design and facial expression.
Birthdays serve as wonderful milestones, giving us a reason to look through past photo albums to see our past attempts and present growth. Quite often we shoot many photos but post very few, always feeling the next set will be better. But sometimes, those initial, purest, and imperfect moments are the ones most worth capturing. Preserving these raw photos without complex post-processing allows me to clearly see every improvement in my makeup and styling. I especially love the combination of the white necktie and black outfit in this look—it feels remarkably clean, sleek, with a restrained yet elegant aesthetic.
In fact, every time I do an outdoor location shoot or studio shoot, it feels like a brief time-travel experience—living in the character's identity for a few hours, experiencing her perspective and state. Although the shooting process can be tiring—sweating under a heavy wig or hesitating to make big movements due to costume tailored cuts—the moment I see playback photos successfully capturing that feel, all that fatigue vanishes. That is why I love cosplay. This love is very simple: just like today, purely to pay homage, out of affection, and for those characters in the gaming world that touched my heart. Bringing out these memories hidden in my phone is also an affirmation of my past efforts. Happy Birthday to my passion, and to this day. At this moment, let's freeze this unique memory belonging to me with this slightly different selfie.
