I finally finished retouching this set of convention photos from the Mengka Anime Expo—today's feature is Saber in her 4th Anniversary cheongsam version.

Let's talk about the costume details first. The fabric has a silken luster; under strong lighting, the blue floral print against the white ground reveals rich textural dimension. The neckline design is very distinctive: a mandarin collar accented with darker patchwork and golden frog closures that seamlessly merge traditional Chinese cheongsam aesthetics with anime character styling. The cuffs and shawl are cut from lightweight, semi-sheer tulle trimmed with lace borders along the edges; in motion, the billowing sleeves and hemline drift gracefully, producing dynamic visual flow. To balance overall visual proportions, I styled the lower half with Black stockings (tight black pantyhose) paired with white high heels. Black has a visual slimming effect that flatters the leg contours while providing sharp contrast against the white dress. Across the waist styling, I also paid special attention to the accessories: a blue sash knotted at the side draping into long tassels introduces a vibrant pop of color to the predominantly white palette. Whenever I wear garments with intricate accessories, I make it a habit to repeatedly check alignments in the mirror so nothing shifts while walking.

I spent a long time at home pre-styling the wig. Saber's signature braided bun and styled bangs required careful fixation using layers of hairspray and bobby pins to ensure they stayed immaculate through an entire day on the bustling convention floor. In makeup, I wore bright green contact lenses, deliberately contoured the eye shape, and paired it with soft pink lip color to capture that balance of gentle warmth and unyielding resolve. Convention halls run hot; to keep the foundation from breaking apart, I took setting powder very seriously and brought ample touch-up supplies. Between shoot rotations, I quickly checked my wig and makeup to make sure my look stayed pristine whenever the shutter clicked.

The shooting environment that day was quite challenging. The venue featured an industrial hall with exposed piping across high ceilings, surrounded by camera gear and attendee rest areas. The lighting was complex—mixing cool downlights from above with natural daylight filtering through background windows. Collaborating with the photographer, we decided to leverage the venue's cool-toned lighting by throwing a strong rim light from behind my profile to carve out crisp contours. This not only separated me from the cluttered backdrop, but also harmonized cleanly with the cool palette of the attire. To catch the fleeting moment of the hemline catching the breeze, I tried several takes in an open space, even manually tossing the fabric before syncing with the photographer's burst shutter. In the full-body capture, the flare of the skirt opened up just right, while the Black stockings and white heels made my legs appear elongated under the cool illumination.

For hand props, I prepared a blue-and-white folding fan and an oiled-paper umbrella. The patterns on the folding fan echoed the prints on the dress, adding classical grace when held in hand. Opening the paper umbrella allowed light filtering through the canopy to cast a soft, diffused glow across my face, resulting in a clean, luminous complexion. During poses, I explored swirling the skirt so the wide sheer sleeves and flared hem traced dynamic arcs, while also testing static compositions like veiling half my face with the fan or softly touching my cheek, showcasing the costume's nuances from varied perspectives. Navigating the crowds of photographers and attendees required sustained focus, but I immersed myself in character—imagining myself strolling through a courtyard garden in a cheongsam, adjusting my gaze and poise to match that inner vision.

Walking all day in high heels was undeniably tiring, but meeting so many fans who love Saber and this styling—and walking away with satisfying photos—made every bit of effort thoroughly worthwhile. The color grading and framing in these convention selects resonated deeply with me, and I look forward to exploring more diverse wardrobe styles in the future.
