To faithfully embody Zhen Hai's signature blend of gentle elegance and razor-sharp edge from Azur Lane, we explored numerous approaches in styling and chiaroscuro lighting during this studio session.
The entire set was decorated like a classical Chinese study, featuring wooden lattice windows, palace lanterns, and a guzheng zither in the background, alongside props including folding fans and sprawling calligraphy scrolls inscribed with brush ink. For wardrobe, I selected an ensemble spliced with black lace, paired with sheer Black stockings and iconic red-soled high heels; to emphasize her icy, mysterious presence, I complemented the look with crimson contact lenses and feather-adorned headpieces. The textiles of this outfit are notably intricate: sheer mesh and delicate lace interweave across the upper bodice, catching varied lighting angles to reveal shifting textural depth. The pairing of Black stockings and red-soled heels not only elongated visual proportions, but also aligned seamlessly with the character's subtly assertive allure. To enhance dimensionality, garment tailoring and accessory placements were fine-tuned repeatedly—particularly the golden choker around my neck, which had to rest precisely at the visual epicenter to balance the exposed skin across the décolletage.
The greatest challenge during the shoot was sustaining that languid yet commanding posture. Sitting in the wooden armchair required constant core and lower-back engagement to keep the leg lines sharp and poised. For the frames reclining halfway across the study desk, the angle of the high heels had to be reset numerous times before achieving the desired line. To honor the scholarly atmosphere, I repeatedly tested opening and fanning out the black feather folding fan, balancing my gaze delicately between serene warmth and sharp intensity. We utilized a Sony A1 camera body paired with the 28-70mm F2.0 GM lens; the wide F2.0 aperture performed brilliantly under moody indoor lighting, maintaining tack-sharp fidelity across the subject while melting background light sources into creamy bokeh, affording me rich latitude for micro-expressions.
Interior illumination relied primarily on warm amber side-backlighting, simulating natural daylight filtering through wooden window lattices. This light washing across the Black stockings and patent leather heels carved out crisp specular highlights and smooth shadow transitions with luscious tactile detail. For styling, the golden choker accented with white tassels and the black feather hairpiece were iterated throughout fitting rehearsals to maximize sculptural presence before the lens.
Throughout the session, I constantly reflected on how to harmonize the character's seemingly contradictory traits. Zhen Hai carries an air of scholarly refinement, yet effortlessly exudes an indisputable, commanding presence. Whether seated upright or reclining upon the writing desk, I avoided overly vulnerable poses, choosing instead to project strength through poised body language. On set, continuous communication with the photographer allowed us to experiment with fresh perspectives and angles to unearth her authentic essence. Collaborating on this project was smooth and filled with creative sparks, and I hope the final gallery conveys this singular atmospheric charm.
