This Akimitsu cosplay photoshoot has always been a personal favorite of mine. Deciding on the theme "Blue Feathers Entering the Painting" was precisely because I fell in love with her cool, aloof, yet luxurious traditional Chinese style temperament. To recreate this look, I specially searched for a lot of dark blue and peacock blue feathers for the costume. The patchwork of layered feathers, black velvet, and lace turned out to have much more depth than imagined. Especially that unique bow at the collar and the blue tassels, the details are a huge plus.
The wig chosen features a gradient light blue. Combined with the black flower hair accessory on top and feather embellishments, it adds a touch of an airy feel to the originally somewhat heavy hairstyle, making it fit better into the ancient style environment. During the shoot, to match this outfit, the photographer specifically arranged bamboo and withered branches in the courtyard, even setting up a circular window and a wooden chair, instantly maximizing the atmosphere.
This time, I intentionally shot without shoes, because Akimitsu's original art features bare feet in many looks, which better reflects her unblemished, otherworldly feeling. When holding the folding fan, I needed to express the character's composure while carrying a sense of laziness; controlling the gaze is truly vital. To capture that cool and aloof feeling, your eyes shouldn't focus too much on the lens but should have a bit of a "distant feeling"—which is exactly where I tried to make a breakthrough this time.
Weaving through the bamboo forest while draped in that layer of blue-green feathers, the light and shadow filtered through the bamboo leaves, leaving a very unique texture. Also, the wooden floor on the ground and the oil-paper umbrella nearby provided plenty of room for posing. I also participated in the color grading ideas during post-processing for this set of photos; I wanted that slightly yellowish, warm-toned ancient painting texture, which looks more striking when contrasted with the blue-green clothing.
The entire shooting process was very enjoyable, and the team members were incredibly dedicated, striving for perfection in everything from arranging the clothes to adjusting the light positions. Every time I try a different character, I learn something new, especially with these traditional Chinese style characters who possess a cool, aloof temperament—it really tests your control over expressions. The final photos exceeded my expectations with excellent texture. I hope you can also feel Akimitsu's unique charm through this combination of cosplay and anime-style photography.
