Shooting this official Sasebo no Shigure cosplay set was filled with challenges from the very preparation stage. The handmade props were the centerpiece crafted specifically for this shoot. Take the mechanical arm unit, for instance: we built the base using EVA and PVC materials, meticulously carved out the mechanical joint details, applied slight weathering effects during airbrushing, and revised the surface topcoat three times to account for camera reflections. The ship rigging generously lent by Teacher Hongcha completed the powerful artillery aesthetic. The entire look relies on a black-and-red palette—a black sailor uniform accented with red stripes, paired with white cuffs and a neckerchief, creating a striking visual impact. For the night industrial style cosplay scenes, photographer Teacher Shuishou used massive red steel structures as a backdrop and chose low-angle shots. This framing not only gave the background a more authentic warship facility atmosphere, but also used wide-angle perspective stretching to make the legs appear longer. In particular, the skin exposed between the Black over-the-knee stockings and the pleated skirt, accentuated by the thigh strap, served as the primary visual anchor. We also had a minor mishap during the shoot: standing water on the ground soaked the boot soles and sock edges, but it ended up producing crystal-clear reflections. Another shot was framed next to an indoor warship model display. To fit that scene, I adopted a restrained kneeling posture, leaning sideways against the wooden counter, which required finding the exact angle to let the fabric drape naturally without making the borrowed mechanical arm look awkward. I am very satisfied with the distinct contrast between these two settings. For cosplay enthusiasts, expressing a deep understanding of the character through photography is essential; this shoot successfully captured both the delicate charm of the girl and the heavy power of ship rigging. Post-processing preserved this weighty texture, avoiding excessive skin smoothing in favor of retaining the textures of the mechanical armor. To ensure a solid grip on that massive mechanical hand, we added anti-slip treatment inside the palm to keep the armor plates from snagging the fabric. All preparatory steps were meticulously executed, and Teacher Shuishou’s precise shutter timing allowed me to focus calmly on conveying the character's temperament. Throughout the shoot, holding poses was the most physically demanding part. The weight of the mechanical arm and hand gear quickly caused arm fatigue, which easily leads to stiff expressions, so during breaks I constantly brainstormed ways to shift my center of gravity and utilize skirt drape lines to conceal the physical strain. Whenever I cosplay, I hold high standards for prop accuracy. The key difficulty with this handmade ship rigging was making load-bearing components sturdy without adding excess weight that could restrict fluid movement. I crafted custom harness straps to keep the props securely anchored to my body. Wearing both props doubled the load, meaning every camera composition had to be built around balance points. Wearing tall black boots truly tests your posture; poor alignment quickly makes the calves look bulky, so I continuously engaged my core and pointed my toes while using the ground puddles as natural mirrors to reflect and elongate the figure. For the indoor frame, with wooden cabinets and naval models as the backdrop, I deliberately lowered my center of gravity into a half-kneel, resting my chin on my left hand to highlight the contrast between the sailor uniform neckerchief and the mechanical arm while avoiding the monotony of standing straight. Teacher Shuishou read the environment acutely; both the overhead red light at night and the soft natural side light indoors harmonized seamlessly with the character's red-and-black palette. This styling carries a compelling gap: the dynamic motion of the skirt and the hardcore weight of the armor achieved balance through the visual guidance of stocking-clad legs. My arms ached for two or three days after wrap, but seeing the finished work made every ounce of effort worthwhile. This is my detailed log of the shoot to share with everyone.
