This cosplay project for "The Song of Solitude" from Reverse: 1999 took an enormous amount of thought and effort from initial prep to the actual shoot. This time, my partner and I teamed up to bring both 37 and Sophia to life. To faithfully capture the aura of the Island Duo, we scouted numerous venues before finally settling on an indoor space with massive gridded floor-to-ceiling windows. The natural light here was crystal clear; sunlight streamed through the panes across the dark flooring, producing sharp light-and-dark contrast without convoluted lighting setups—perfect for manifesting the suppressed yet intensely charged dynamic between the characters.
First, addressing 37's styling: her vibrant red hair is an unmistakable signature. To keep the wig from looking cheap or synthetic, I spent hours styling and caring for it, especially the braided crown and the metallic hair accessories, which required spraying hairspray while meticulously refining their placement. The makeup avoided overt sweetness, emphasizing defined bone structure and deep eye contours to channel her calm yet sorrowful gaze. The black-and-gold palette of the outfit felt exceptionally premium; the metal skeleton adornments across the chest and the wide neck choker were quite heavy, but wearing them made slipping into character that much easier. The dagger in my hand was deliberately selected—crafted from plastic yet finished with metallic coatings; pointing the tip downward naturally commanded tension and intimidation.
Sophia's styling was an equally massive undertaking. Her long, blue-and-white ombré curls were exceptionally long, and we tested several lying postures to capture the effect of her hair sprawling across the floor. My partner wore the golden bodice and arm rings, which yielded stunning skin texture under intense backlighting. We spent considerable time rehearsing our confrontation poses to harmonize composition with physical balance. Leaning over her, I held my expression completely still, uttering not a word. This process tested our mutual chemistry; shifting even slightly off-angle would make the dagger's blade position look awkward and jarring.
Our photographers, Baizhou and Maomao, offered incredibly professional advice on composition, preserving authentic raw colors rather than leaning heavily on filters. Whether using high-angle overhead shots or low-angle perspectives, they beautifully accentuated the power disparity and diagonal tension between the two. This cosplay work represented a brand-new milestone for me. Under the 2D Vision Project initiative, this collection chronicles our entire journey from makeup trials to real-world staging. The narrative of 37 and Sophia carries a distinct gravity in "The Song of Solitude"; though words on set could never fully encompass that sensation, through the grip on the dagger and a lowered gaze, I strove to convey their intertwined destinies. Prop placement, fabric edges, and wig strand directions—every minute detail was magnified under the lens, deepening my appreciation for the sheer dedication high-tier work demands. The story of the Apeiron continues, and we are touching these characters in our own way.
