The completion of this "perfect answer" actually underwent a long period of conception. Melanie is my absolute favorite character in Reverse: 1999. Though she doesn't seem to have a huge fan base, the less mainstream a character is, the more I want to record her traits through the lens. Cosplaying two forms in one go this time was both a homage to the character and a little test of my own photography, makeup, and styling.

Form one is what I prefer to call the Vintage Scholar version. A greyish-brown tweed newsboy cap paired with black-framed glasses, holding a thick book with an olive green cover, alongside the trophy symbolizing her highlight moment. The brown leather jacket has quite a structured and firm texture; to match her temperament, I layered a red turtleneck under a white collared shirt, keeping it warm while adding depth to the neckline. This standout scholarly feel carries a unique perspective on observing the world.

Form two is an entirely different biker punk style. The glossy black leather jacket features a white lapel collar, with a heart-shaped metal pendant right at the center serving as the visual anchor. Pushing sunglasses up onto my head and pulling bright red patent leather gloves onto my hands, the visual focus of the entire outfit lies not only in the striking contrast between black and red, but also in the lower body styling. The color-matched harmony of the red stockings outfit and burgundy patent leather Mary Janes softens the toughness of the leather jacket outfit, adding a touch of playful rebellion. When shooting in different settings, I deliberately adjusted the angles of the trophy and book in my hands to ensure a more comprehensive display of the outfit.

Regarding scene and lighting setups, I mainly relied on warm indoor light sources alongside red and magenta ambient lights. The red light falling on the blonde hair strands and diffusing off the surface of the black leather jacket gave the imagery a mysterious, psychedelic texture. To achieve that "as planned" perfect effect, I set up my equipment in different corners of the room. After all, without outdoor scenery, controlling indoor light and shadow requires extra care—especially avoiding harsh reflections from the leather jacket surface that might flatten the dimensional shadows on the face.

During the styling process, the main difficulty with Melanie's character lies in her tsundere, slightly mysterious aura. The seemingly casual blonde waves actually required quite a few bobby pins to maintain crown volume. Coupled with the bangs, I had to carefully adjust the backward tilt angle of the newsboy cap when wearing it to ensure an unruly look in the frame. Posing with gloves seems effortless, but in composition, controlling hand placement near the chin or cheek requires care—it needs to express relaxation without obscuring the radiance of the eyes.

I don't think lesser-known characters lack charm; on the contrary, Melanie's obsession with specific things and the rich storytelling behind her resonate deeply with me. The results of this shoot—whether holding a book intently in a leather jacket outfit or gesturing casually in red gloves—feel like a satisfying answer to myself. Setting aside technical execution and returning to the character herself, striving to present her complex and captivating traits was the most fulfilling part of the entire process.
