At the Changsha Reverse: 1999 ONLY convention site this time, I finally fully captured the convention photos for Flutterpage's look. Special thanks to my Balloon Party partner for their assistance, matching the setting mentioned in the post description: "With the help of Balloon Party, Flutterpage flew across the entire wilderness." Although the environment on site was relatively simple, mainly relying on studio lights and the basic ambient lighting of the venue, everyone worked together to bring out this atmosphere full of fairy-tale charm and placed wishes.
Regarding this costume, a lot of thought actually went into preparing many of the details. The large white bow and origami-styled decorations on top of the head, adorned with fine red ribbons, are visually striking but also extremely prone to losing their shape while moving around. The brown fabric of the coat carries a vintage texture; with the grid patterns on the surface, the orange patchwork color blocks, plus the crisscross lacing at the collar and cuffs, and the white pom-pom tassels, it offers a rich sense of layering. The inner blue vest and the blue pleated skirt below maintain overall color unity, and the design of the white collar keeps the neck area from looking empty. To restore the overall temperament, I specially wore bright blue colored contact lenses paired with short, slightly curly brown hair. For shoes, I chose platform glossy black leather shoes paired with white over-the-knee socks, making the visual center of gravity of the lower body more stable.
During the shoot, holding that white envelope prop with a red wax seal was a core narrative point of the entire photoset. The envelope symbolizes the paper letters written to the critters. I posed in several different actions during the shoot, including a casual state of sitting on a white chair with my legs crossed, as well as holding the edges of the coat with both hands to open it up and interact with the letter and envelope. The photographer, Da WiFi, kept the composition very clean; for instance, in the half-body shot holding the envelope, the character is perfectly centered without any squeezing sensation from edge cropping, and the facial lighting is very soft, naturally making the features look more delicate and cute. The shot of sitting on the floor used a white plush carpet as a base, combined with the strong light from above, striking a well-defined silhouette of light and shadow, which also gave the fabric texture of the brown coat a premium feel.
At the shooting location, since it was a Changsha ONLY event, there were many fellow fans on-site, with crowds of people walking in the background. The studio lights and reflectors were set up right beside us, drawing quite a few curious glances. However, this feeling of being busy together with everyone at the convention felt very real, without any sense of distance. Even if the background of the photos was slightly cluttered (such as equipment and pedestrians), the final effect still perfectly highlighted the exquisite feel of the character. This time, I not only experienced dressing up in the unique worldview of Reverse: 1999, but also tried a concrete expression of throwing paper airplanes and passing on wishes through this character. Being able to successfully fix the styling of Flutterpage and that story in the wilderness into the form of photos brings a real sense of achievement. Thanks to Balloon Party for providing the inspiration and coordination, and thanks to WiFi for the hard work shooting. I look forward to bringing new attempts next time and continuing to have a blast at conventions.
