This outfit for Altria was prepared last week, and taking advantage of the great evening light, we headed out for a night shoot. While taking a stroll with the King along the riverside boardwalk, the blurred city lights in the background looked fantastic, so we made a spontaneous decision to snap a few shots right there.
The shooting process was fairly casual. Because it's a daily, slightly business-casual ensemble—a crisp white shirt paired with a navy pleated skirt and black stockings—the texture looked incredible under the warm fill light at night. A friend held the fill light from the front-left at a slight low angle to accentuate my side profile, highlighting the illuminated front of the white shirt against the dim background.
In terms of posing, we relied mostly on natural walking and looking back. The photographer pointed out that standing straight facing the camera was too stiff, so they asked me to turn my back, look back over my shoulder, and cast my gaze slightly downward or toward the distant river surface. The riverside breeze was quite strong, but instead of forcing every strand of bangs and hair into place, letting the blonde hair blow naturally against my cheek added an effortless, relaxed vibe. The elf ears adhered securely without worry of falling off, and the blue ribbon subtly echoed the distant blue neon lights in the cityscape.
A key consideration during the shoot was the wide aperture needed at night; while creating gorgeous background bokeh, it easily caused motion blur while moving. We took around a dozen shots, and this one had the most balanced composition, placing the subject centrally with well-proportioned negative space.
Post-processing was kept to simple adjustments of color temperature and contrast. To preserve the authentic nighttime ambiance, we avoided over-flattening the tones, letting the crisp white shirt and black stockings retain their natural textures. The dark pleated skirt flattered body proportions nicely, and combined with black stockings under evening lighting, the lines came through clean and defined.
The sound of the camera shutter blended with the low hum of the city, with occasional passersby watching and complimenting the blonde hair. However, I maintained a side profile without looking into the lens to capture that cool, resolute, and heroic demeanor. Given the character's naturally dignified temperament, I chose not to smile, which made the mood feel much more authentic.
To complement this look, I deliberately chose not to carry heavy prop swords, favoring subtraction to emphasize a casual, slice-of-life feel. After all, heavy weapons would disrupt the ambiance of a casual riverside walk. Our route followed the railings: the King monitored the camera while I worked on finding angles. Once the light was dialed in, the shots flowed seamlessly with a higher hit rate than expected.
This post mainly documents my practical takeaways from shooting this outfit. Night lighting is inherently intricate, requiring a fine balance in portrait fill light so that the face neither overpowers the background nor falls into heavy shadow. I hope to try this character again in a more spacious setting or an even better location next time, perhaps exploring a wider variety of dynamic poses.
