July's weather was scorching hot, making outdoor photography quite the challenge, yet I still decided to bring this Emilia cosplay project to life this summer. Throughout Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World, Emilia's image has always been one I yearned to recreate—her gentle yet slightly detached divine serenity aligns seamlessly with the concept of an angel and holy maiden. Before shooting this set, I conducted thorough preparations. For the wig, I selected a silvery-white long straight style with blunt bangs; since I had to wear pointed elf ear prosthetics outdoors, I tested and adjusted the ear-clip adhesives multiple times beforehand to ensure they wouldn't slip off, even prepping sweat-proof tape. In terms of makeup, the eyes were blended with soft pinkish-purple tones and paired with light-colored contact lenses to accentuate a clear, crystalline gaze, while the base utilized lightweight, long-lasting foundation to withstand the summer heat.
The gown's detailing is elaborate: primarily white, with broad purple ruffles and piped hems along the sleeves and skirt. To capture that ethereal lightness, I added structural stiff tulle inside the skirt, ensuring the layered petal-like shapes held their voluminous shape. For the lower half, I styled it with over-the-knee White stockings to preserve color harmony. The shoot was divided into indoor and outdoor sessions. Indoors was a vintage café featuring black-and-white checkerboard floors and deep green velvet sofas that resembled an oil painting. I incorporated the vintage table lamps and the crane painting in the background, utilizing warm golden light to foster a quiet, tranquil atmosphere. When seated, my leg lines naturally extended, and the combination of White stockings with white heels elongated my proportions gracefully.
The outdoor portion took place before black-framed glass windows. July's sunlight was blindingly harsh, so I had the photographer look for rim-lit backlight angles, allowing the sunlight to carve an ethereal halo across the silver hair—evoking the arrival of Angel wings. To convey the character's weightless grace, I avoided rigid standing postures, instead gently lifting my hands with fingers softly curled and casting my gaze toward the incoming light. The flowing motion of the expansive sleeves in the summer breeze is difficult to encapsulate fully in static images, so I repeatedly calibrated the swing of my arms to seize the precise moment the fabric billowed into an elegant arc. The white floral hairpiece by my ear also radiated an exquisite softness under this illumination.
The most demanding part of the shoot was actually controlling facial expressions. To channel her pure and sacred innocence, smiles couldn't be exaggerated, and the eyes needed to maintain a serene, composed focus—a subtlety far harder to grasp than dynamic poses. Communicating continuously with the photographer, we experimented with low-angle shots to emphasize the layered cascading skirt and leg contours. This entire set embodies my deep affection for the character, eschewing heavy reliance on digital filters in favor of refining the garment textures, the silky luster of the hair, and every subtle posture. I truly hope this captures that quiet, resilient strength of hers within the warm summer breeze in this Japanese-style cosplay.
