After finishing this set of Convention photos on Day 2 of the May Day Spring Festival, I had to rush off immediately to make a dinner reservation, not expecting the finalized shots to turn out so remarkably well. Photographed by Wuwang, today I'm sharing some insights and experiences from the shoot.
Let's start with the overall makeup and styling. This costume from Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World has plenty of intricate details: the black ribbon on the chest, the white ruffles, and the diamond patterns at the waist all required patient adjustment. Grooming the bangs of the light blue wig took substantial care, and the positioning of the pink hair accessories and white floral clips was fine-tuned multiple times to stay faithful to the character while preventing shifting while walking. Because the outdoor sunlight was quite strong, I chose a lightweight, sheer base foundation to avoid a heavy look, focusing instead on layered eye makeup paired with blue colored contacts for a clean visual presentation in this Outdoor photography session.
The costume itself carries noticeable weight, especially the wide detached sleeves and the structured tiered ruffled skirt, which easily tripped me up when moving between spots. When wearing the White stockings, I paid special attention to smoothness to prevent uneven light reflections caused by fabric wrinkles. To maintain fluid posing throughout the shoot, I had to balance my center of gravity carefully without messing up the skirt drape.
In the cover photo (Photo 1), I lifted one leg while raising an accessory with one hand. This pose requires solid core balance, taking multiple attempts to capture the fleeting moment where the skirt fluttered naturally and the leg lines extended gracefully. This photo beautifully highlights the White stockings and leg contours. Photo 2 features a skirt-lifting pose paired with a slightly downward gaze, conveying a well-behaved, demure feel. In Photo 4, I held a brown tray with both hands; prop positioning was vital here, as the slightest awkward angle looked stiff, so we adjusted repeatedly to achieve a natural interactive feel. In Photo 5, I reached forward with a slight upper-body lean to reveal the garment's frontal layers while directing a sharp, focused gaze into the lens.
Dealing with cluttered backgrounds is a major challenge when taking Convention photos outdoors. With large crowds, palm trees, and venue buildings all around, the subject easily gets lost without the background separation of a wide-aperture lens. Wuwang handled lighting expertly, using the floor tile reflections across the plaza to fill shadows, ensuring skin stayed luminous while preserving the tactile texture of the fabric. The overcast weather provided a breezy blue-gray sky that unexpectedly served as the ideal backdrop, creating a harmonious color balance with the light blue wig and dark dress.
A telephoto lens was used to compress spatial perspective, rendering passersby and cluttered backgrounds into soft, creamy bokeh, which not only isolated the subject but also heightened the atmospheric depth. Besides the tray, another prop was a small broom; holding the broom required relaxed shoulders to convey the character's calm composure.
Although this shoot was done in a rush, we didn't force overly rigid, difficult poses. Instead, we aimed for effortless relaxation to embody the character's personality. For cosplay, the costume is the exterior shell, but facial expressions and subtle movements are what truly bring a character to life. What I love most about this photoset is its effortless authenticity without heavy retouching, capturing the nimble charm of Rem from Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World. This convention shooting experience truly helped me understand my own photographic strengths better.
