At this outdoor pool in Chimelong, where the sunlight made the shimmering water dazzlingly bright, my partner and I completed this Highlander Twins Cosplay photoshoot from Blue Archive. For the styling, we chose solid black one-piece swimsuits paired with opaque White stockings, complemented by emerald green wigs, custom pointed elf ears, and vivid red lips that I've grown accustomed to lately. The overall makeup and styling offered strong contrast, effortlessly accentuating a translucent clarity under bright outdoor daylight. Choosing these characters from Blue Archive for a summer edition was inspired by their lively and confident personalities, which matched the refreshing pool vibe seamlessly for this Poolside photoshoot.
The most demanding aspect of the shoot was capturing the water splashes. To freeze that synchronized frame of both of us lifting our legs to kick water simultaneously, my partner and I aligned our rhythm multiple times in the water. The dynamic height of the splashes had to stay uniform and the timing of kicking our toes out had to be perfectly synchronized; otherwise, the motion in the photos would look messy, which took some time to calibrate. Fortunately, the water clarity at Chimelong was superb; sunlight beaming down created natural water droplet refractions, adding immense charm to the frame. Soaking in the pool all day in White stockings, the fabric grew slightly heavier after absorbing water, but the light reflection was surprisingly stunning. Combined with the minimalist color blocks of the black swimsuits, the visual presentation against the blue sky was exceptionally clean.
Midway through shooting, we adjusted our shoulder alignment and wig directions several times to prevent awkward fabric wrinkles or hair ends scattering too wildly during dynamic movements. Because the surroundings were open and expansive, keeping the camera angle slightly lower allowed both full-body silhouettes to be captured within the frame while leaving ample breathing room in the sky above to avoid cluttered elements. Honestly, when starting a water-based shoot outdoors, facing the gaze of onlookers made me a bit nervous at first, but once we focused on cueing each other's movements, we quickly locked into character. The setting of the Highlander Twins naturally carries a crisp anime aesthetic; combined with White stockings and black swimsuits, this Twins cosplay not only retained canonical character recognition but also suitably showcased the vibrant energy unique to summer.
To capture satisfying frames, we paced back and forth along the pool edge and shallow area several times. While the pool tiles provided some traction, maintaining stability in water still relied on engaging core strength. In the final dynamic capture we locked in, both our centers of gravity were rock-solid, and the kicked-up splashes were crystal-clear, landing perfectly in the foreground. When cropping, we deliberately kept the subjects centered within the frame without cramped border crowding, achieving just the right level of relaxed poise.
Looking back after wrapping this shoot, the greatest takeaway is that outdoor natural light and water act as organic filters, yet controlling chaotic elements in water still requires thorough prior preparation. It was truly enjoyable to team up with my partner under such radiant weather, bringing our beloved 2D characters into the real world through cosplay—even if just for a fleeting instant, freezing a vivid summer memory.
