For this Betty cosplay shoot, I used a shallow depth-of-field lens and manually adjusted the lighting angles to distinctly bring out the character's silhouette and focused catchlights in the eyes. In terms of costume, the pink Western-style doll dress has a substantial texture, and the layered white fur collar on the chest needed repeated combing to stay fluffy; keeping the cuffs and collar neat was essential during shooting to avoid ruining the overall aesthetic.
For makeup, the focus was on recreating a spirit and Western-style doll vibe: a very fair base, very light brows, and deliberately downturned eyeliner to enhance an innocent look. Combined with large-diameter blue contacts and red eyeshadow beneath the eyes, the roundness of the eyes was emphasized in post-processing to make the gaze more lively. The lip makeup used a natural peachy-pink tone for an endearing charm.
The hardest part was this set of Blonde twin-tails. The wig used internal structural frames for shaping and was heavier than expected, taking quite some time to balance. While the pink bows and white lace trims on both sides looked gorgeous, they easily snagged on the clothes behind them, requiring careful control of movement during the shoot. The massive hair volume also limited framing options on set, so we relied heavily on wide apertures and shallow depth of field to highlight facial expressions.
Securing the apple ornament on top of the head firmly while keeping it from looking rigid took some ingenuity. Strong backlighting was used to illuminate the edges of the silhouette, while front fill light softened facial contours, allowing the background blur to make the doll-like figure stand out even more. The overall red-and-white color scheme is very pleasing, highlighting character traits while looking fantastic on camera.
For poses, I tried clasping my hands in front of my chest and gently touching the edge of the Blonde twin-tails, which, paired with subtle shifts in expression, perfectly brought out Betty's paradoxical blend of childishness and mature composure. Because the outfit was heavy and the layered sleeves with wide cuffs covered much of the body, special attention was paid to keeping the upper body upright and poised.
Regarding props, to maintain the shape of the back pom-poms and front pink rope knots, about twenty minutes was spent smoothing everything out before shooting, and reflective fabrics required careful lighting control. A cosplay with such intricate props truly demands immense patience—from makeup to on-set adjustments, immersion and fidelity are paramount.
