Today, I headed out to a windmill floral field in the suburbs packed with outdoor gear for Eyjafjalla. Right upon arriving at the location, we kicked off our first session on the Merry-go-round. The vibrant blue multi-tiered ruffled skirt paired with white Stockings and Mary Jane shoes popped with exquisite presence against the pristine white carousel steeds. To faithfully reflect the visual balance of the original design, the pair of curved white horns at the crown and the oversized bright blue ribbon bow had to be anchored securely, as even the slightest tilt would throw off the entire visual equilibrium.
Garment maintenance proved to be quite an exercise in patience. The puffed sleeves of the off-the-shoulder ruffled white top easily collapsed, requiring me to fluff and reshape the fabric gathers after every pose transition, while aligning the broad navy waist cinch with its red-and-white stripes. The prop in hand was a colossal golden four-pronged fork with considerable physical heft. Holding it up for poses—especially single-handed grips or raising it aloft—demanded sustained exertion through the forearms and deltoids; otherwise, micro-tremors would introduce motion blur into the frame. Navigating through the flower bushes, the white Stockings were constantly prone to snagging on twigs and leaves, so every stride required hitching up the skirt hem with extreme care.
Moving into the Flower sea cosplay setting, I switched between two distinct posing routines. The pink and purple floral clusters stood relatively tall; working with the golden hour light, the photographer shot against the sun, casting a gorgeous rim-light halo across my hair strands and skirt trim. Later, we drifted to a wooden swing, resting the oversized prop horizontally across my lap with legs crossed naturally, allowing the texture of the white Stockings to catch the warm sun beautifully. Over on the wooden boardwalk, the wind picked up dramatically, billowing the skirt out and gifting us several remarkably dynamic, kinetic frames.
We shot continuously from afternoon until dusk. Once evening fell, the Merry-go-round switched on its warm ambient fairy lights; shooting under direct flash against that backdrop produced the enchanting nostalgia of an amusement park at night. Every single micro-step, from combing wig fringe to dialing in the grip angle of the hefty prop, demanded meticulous patience. While hauling a weighted, voluminous skirt and a metal staff across sprawling lawns was physically draining, reviewing the final images made this entire outdoor expedition completely worthwhile.
