This Studio shoot chose Mayano Top Gun from Umamusume: Pretty Derby. As a character I've loved a lot recently, I finally brought this classic pilot jacket styling to life.
The details of the outfit in the photos are actually very numerous. The military green jacket is covered with badges of various sizes, the inner wear is a yellow crop short vest, paired below with white techwear shorts and brown Stockings. The most eye-catching are still the orange-yellow plush tail behind and the ears on top of the head. The overall color scheme is dominated by yellow, green, and brown, making it very vibrant.
During the shoot, to capture Top Gun's full-of-energy dynamic feel, the photographer had me try many large-motion candid shots, such as single-leg jumping, spreading arms, or pointing at the lens. To reflect the character's liveliness, I was basically smiling in front of the lens while maintaining body balance and motion tension; some suspended poses took over a dozen shots to achieve a satisfying effect.
Focusing on this outfit, to restore the 2D proportions, the shorts and waist straps needed to be tied extremely tight, fortunately the photographer gave me a lot of guidance on positioning and posing. The leg Stockings and boots tended to slip due to constant movement, so I kept adjusting them between shots.
The lighting for this Studio shoot was very translucent, and the background chose a clean off-white, making the contrast between military green and yellow even more vivid. Comparing with the original artwork reference on the side, I still tried my best to restore the character's expression and clothing details, such as the dog tag necklace and the colored braided rope around the waist. The badge positions on the jacket, the yellow borders of the shorts, and the belt buckles were all repeatedly checked during the early fitting stage. To make the wig's layering better, I also spent a lot of time grooming the bangs and the curve of the twin tails.
The tail prop behind actually has a certain weight, so when landing from a jump, I needed to slightly control my center of gravity, otherwise it was easy to fall backward, which was also a small challenge during the shoot. The overall photo success rate was very high, and I'm super happy to record this Top Gun cosplay. The texture and color matching of this outfit still look extremely distinctive in the 3D world.
