The theme of this shoot revolves around the Amiya: The Song of Long Voyage design, choosing extensive black elements in the styling to enhance the overall mystery and opulence. The black lace-trimmed Lolita dress paired with black tights fits seamlessly against the vintage piano room setting. To prevent the expansive black from feeling dull, bright blue chokers and leg bands were specially chosen as accessories to brighten the composition, alongside blue colored contacts that brought a vivid agility to the entire hair and makeup styling.
Throughout the shoot, the piano and sheet music served as fantastic props, not only adding narrative depth to the imagery, but also utilizing elevation differences to adjust my posture. In the first photo, a crossed-leg seated posture was used with a slight profile turn; this angle flatters the lines of the legs, visually elongating them when combined with the texture of the Black stockings. Furthermore, coordinating hand poses is also vital—such as overlapping or raising both hands—softening otherwise rigid arm lines.
The scene's lighting mainly relied on natural light outside the window as the key light, complemented by warm yellow indoor desk lamps and kerosene lamps as fill lights. This lighting scheme makes the skin appear fairer and more translucent while enriching the layered depth of the backdrop. Hydrangeas deliberately placed in the background added pops of color to the frame, visually echoing the blue elements worn on the character.
Regarding hair and makeup details, trimming the bangs of the long straight hair required styling treatment by the hairstylist to ensure they wouldn't obstruct the eyes during the shoot. For the eye makeup, smudging techniques were used to enlarge the eye shape, giving the gaze a softer look. Because the skirt hem is quite voluminous, attention had to be paid to the spreading direction of the skirt and smoothing out folds when sitting to prevent looking bulky.
The overall shoot went very smoothly, testing multiple angles to highlight the features of this costume. The handling of light and shadow, the curation of props, and the model's presence collectively determined the final image quality. Regarding the texture choice for Black stockings, I recommend choosing a slightly semi-sheer pair; this reveals richer depth under bright light and greatly benefits post-processing.
